Let's say it's raining raining and or it's not late enough to go to sleep or just a boreing day your decide to just sit down and relax.

I was thinking of taking a radio and a MP3 player to listen to my Podcasts and maybe buy one of those Ebook readers and do some reading, kind of sounds Ok to me, always wanted to read a book some day :)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Here are some options -

- read a book
- play cards
- play the map game (get a map, the person who's turn it is, spots and obscure place name, everyone else looks for it, the peson who finds the place is the winner and goes next....)
- spend time - photo-pfaffing (eg macro shots... tripod... filters..... thats at least a few hours gone)
- take a book of cryptic crossword puzzles
- I have heard of trips where someone will pull out the bushwalking club membership list - and then a discussion takes place about each person on the list (not including those on the trip of course...)
- spend time cooking (you always end up eating more food on rest days or stormbound days)
- talk about food.... good on a long trip... especially about food that no one on the trip has
- wonder what the heck you are doing there...... (for those who subscribe to the view that you get 60% of the enjoyment of a walk in the planning stage, and another 60% talking about the trip afterwards and minus 20% actually on the trip itself)

I've just been given a Kindle as a present.

I'll be taking that along on solo trips to fill in some camp time.
In a MLD cuben dry bag and in a bubble wrap case to protect the little thing it comes in at 260 grams.

Not bad for something that will hold so many books in memory.
Still haven't tried loading maps and track notes on it, That's next though.......
I am a GEAR JUNKIE and GRAM COUNTER !!

There, It's out. I said it, Ahh I feel better now

On solo day hikes I like to get the knife out and do some bushcraft, I also love to cook and the before I pull out the native American flute..... Then it's off the sleep in the hammock ( if is a overnighter ) with a book.

Pull out my harmonica and play through all the tunes I can remember, and after that make some up!

To pass the time when a walk is getting long and boring, we cycle through the alphabet naming bands. Not allowed to repeat any! It's harder than you think.

Confucius he say "To be bored, it first has to occur to you that you are bored".

The only time I've ever been bored on a bushwalk was one evening when my companions went to bed at 8pm claiming to be worn out by the long day. Long day? In the middle of winter? GMAB. I was still wide awake so amused myself looking at the fire till I got tired or the fire went out - can't remember which came first. This wasn't Tassie so I didn't see the necessity to bring my waterproof library and MP3s weren't invented then. Strangely enough, or perhaps not, I've never spent even a minute bored when I've been out on extended walks by myself even in monotonous country.
I'm going to be 8 days with a small group on the Snowies main range in early summer. Anyone claiming they're bored can go out and make themselves useful by mustering brumbies or counting wombats. :?

Hey check the stats.. we get LESS rain fall (average per year) than most capital cities... just because it takes 100 days of rain here to get what some of you lot get in a day means nothing......

Read classics; or anything else that perks my interest.

Go on e-quests for track notes and long lost maps of old etc.

Contemplate and sometimes procrasinate.

Binoculars. Take photos. One of my favourites is to write in my trip notebook, the little things you see, the fine details of the trail or sights. I find this embeds the details of a trip deeper into your memory as it entices you take in more and look for detail - as well as helping you to retell the story of your travels to your family and friends upon your return. I also like to think our daughter will cherish my tripnotes and inspire the next generation of travellers and vagabonders. When you use the same book for your travels, you also take along the notes from previous trips - you can reminisce(sp) on old trips too.

Sometimes go and harass a trout or 3, always taking a camera.

For some strange reason I never get bored when I am "out there" so much to see ,hear and do but then again I have never been solo for more than an overnighter so a crossword puzzle book would be my companion on a solo extended walk.

Talking Books on the ipod when in the tent and not getting off to sleep. Fishing a creek or river if possible, or talking with other bushwalkers about gear, food, weather and other trails yet to be experienced. All good
