Just some further clarification on the wiki version of this idea...
The wiki page would be the equivalent of the super-moderated forum topic. Ie, it would be a concise but comprehensive reference all on one page, without any additional discussion to wade through. A related forum topic could include additional discussions, as well as new items and/or corrections which people might want to suggest for the wiki page. Of course anyone in the wiki group (which is easy to join) can update the wiki page directly themselves. Then when people ask transport questions, we could pull answers from the wiki page to post in reply, or could simply link to the wiki page suggesting that they look there (and that they let us know if it answered their question or not).
One problem with this is that the information on the wiki page can get out of date, but I think this is a possibility whatever format the information is in, if there are not people dedicated to keeping it up to date.
Here are a couple of existing examples which are similar:
NB: The wiki page wouldn't necessarily need a single corresponding forum topic, but can have information sourced from any topic in which relevant information is posted, and of course from any other relevant sources.
