Which is the best mug for bushwalking?

OK I have been pooh poohed for having my old faithfull enamal tin mug on this site.
SO tell me 'What is the Best mug'?
I choose the tin one as I can put it on the stove/fire and heat and go.
It does not taste of plastic.
It wont crack or split.
It is very forgiving and may only chip or bend if totally abused.
You can scour it with sand or green things and not scratch it.
So, please bite into this discussion and put your two bob's worth in and show me your mug and why you think it is best.

I fully support the enamel mug thanks!
As noted, its robust, has a handle that won't fall off, if scoured with sand it doesn't carry odd flavours, can be used for multiple purposes etc. The only slight downfall is in its heat retaining and transfer properties. Yes it does lose heat quickly - sit it by a fire or wrap some fleece around it. No you can't wrap your hands around it when just filled with boiling or damn cold water - wrap a fleece around it.

Now if only they were available with a water-tight secure lid they would be perfect!

It's my billy, heat it straight up on the gas stove. Just put my bowl on top of it to use as a lid when on the stove.

Sorry for poo pooing your tin cup Marty, I hope I haven't given you a complex I can admit to being fairly happy with the ol' enamel mugs for about a decade though until I felt I needed a change. I bought one of those Kupilka cups a few months ago which are 50% wood & 50% plastic and I really like it even though I generally dislike any plastic products. It is supposed to meet the EU standards though which I tell myself makes it okay and it is recyclable... it's light, it's tough, it feels nice to the touch, doesn't seem to absorb odours, has a good size & shape and is really trendy (great for those back country double decaf lattes ) plus it's well insulated.

And for the car camping box I bought a 50c china mug from an op shop, best of both worlds & it's got a little bunny on the side.

Tibetan 550 ml 89gm (with a lid), dedicated Tea Only and water boiler would never contaminate it with that suspect liquid that you have in yours M-G will burden myself with a Lexan glass 86g for suspect liquids, no COS or Tea contamination in my "grog cup " please and for COS or even 2 Min Noodles I use one of those 500ml screw top plastic containers 51g (it fits the Tibetan Mug so I have a Handle) and as my 450 ml Enamel Mug (well used) weighs 100gm I am happy to carry the extra 126 gm for clean flavour.

Have been known in the not so distant past to use the same mug for all just dont now, guess it must come with my refined taste buds

Hey Marty

You make a good case for ye olde enamel mug. After considering your passionate and considered arguments for these stalwarts of the bush I realized that I too could use a sturdy, multiple-purpose device like the time-proven, enamel mug. I am nothing if not flexible, so today at Anaconda I spared no expense (well, $2) to get my own one.

(They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.)

Hey Phan_Tom I hold no grudge against you for giving me grief about my tin mug (if I ever meet you I will bang said cup on your head - see another use for them )
If I am being forced into a social drink with others I will pack my little stainless 'Shot' beaker which I purchsed from $2 Shoppe which is the best thing for grog be it wine wiskey or bubbles and it wieghs not much at all with all the atributes of a tin mug less handle (cold drinks only).

I used enamel mugs for a long time. After squashing it under the pack so that it bent just enough for the enamel to crack into nasty sharp glassy splinters, I stopped using them.

I usually just use a plain stainless steel mug, which shares the benefits of the enamel mug, but not the potential for sharp enamels splinters (however, remote the likelyhood).

I was recently given a titanium double-wall (insulated) mug, and that's very good (can't cook in it, though, but I never cook in them anyhow).

How well do the double walled ti mugs insulate Son of a beach? I imagine that they are probably a good choice if you don't use your cup to cook in, depending on the price I guess too.

I have a double walled one. Stays warm in cold conditions for a long long time!! Thing to watch out is the cup doesnt FEEL warm, so you have a sip and burn the *&%$#! out of your mouth

It certainly doesn't feel like it transfers much heat from my cup of tea to my hands. The outside just gets slightly warm - just barely noticeable, rather than very hot. So not as good as a thermos, but certainly quite effective.

sounds like they are the goods, thanks. I see that you can also get a lid with some of them to stop spillage and increase the insulation propoerties which is handy. But I'm not sure I could cough up that much cash, I see they go for about $40, twice what I paid for the kupilka and I thought that was expensive for a 'cup'!

I use a Halulite Minimalist by GSI Outdoors, it's a neat little package. Great for solo trips as I get a cook pot and a drinking mug in one. I never bothered using the plastic "Foon" (spork) that comes with it, a Ti spork is more my thing when i'm shovelling my food down as fast as possible

The best mug for bushwalking is the mug that you are happiest using.

My favourite mug is a cheap plastic mug that I purchased from my local supermarket about 5 or 6 years ago, it weighs 61.2g, holds 500ml, does not get too hot to hold, being plastic it does not loose heat quickly when very cold, I think I paid around $5 for it. I have used it as a breakfast/dinner bowl but prefer to use a Orikaso bowl these days, it is my tea cup, soup bowl, wine glass, port glass, mixing bowl, storage container, etc, I especially love the port flavoured tea in the morning.

I used to have what we call a "kåsa". Traditionally they were made of wood but the modern plastic version is great, you can stack them together and use them as a cup, bowl or whatever. Very rugged, comes in different sizes and lightweight enough for me. Lost it and is nowdays using a small (too small) plastic cup I got from Woolworth for 50 cent.

I drink tea, coffee, wine, and beer (water too, of course) from it and it holds no aftertaste from what went before. i also use it to scoop water from pools, ladle water over my head, and I cook in it. It's 500ml and 97g. I also have a 1litre version, with a lid, as a cook pot. It comes in at 112g. The smaller one cost me $3.50 and the larger one - $2.99. My vote for best mug is mine because it was cheap, I have not broken it, and it's multifunctional in more ways than an enamal or plastic one.

My first SS mug came from Wollies on special for $2.50 about 5 years ago. I lost it. Although my fishing/camping buddy now has one that looks just like the one I lost, even down to a couple of dints I seem to recognise. Latest one was bought from the local cheap shop (Brissy area). Amazing what you find among the junk (They had 4 packs of the star picket style tent pegs for $5.99 last week; same items go for $10 at Anaconda). My Fire Maple stove fits nicely, plus a couple of coffee and sugar sachets and a lighter.

The 1litre version also came from the cheap shop. As insurance against loss, I bought the thieving mate one too in the certain knowledge that he would want one! A 230g gas canister, a packet of dry noodles, and a Cup-o-soup fit under the lid. It's actually lighter than some of the titanium versions (weight for volume) out there.

Thanks, I always used a basic enamel cup in the past (which there's nothing wrong with) & considered something a bit more personal if I was ever going to get something expensive...not Finnish but I did work for a Norwegian company for 15 years (quit this year to travel).
