New boots

Hi all

I am looking for a new pair of boots, I have a pair of Scarpa SL (think they are the model before) and the lining has finally given out. So I was looking at another pair, or maybe something like the Lowa Baffin Pro, or Meindl Borneo Pro.
My questions, can anyone recommend one over the others? Also are Lowa and /or Meindl available in Australia?

The SL M3 are also on sale from Paddy Pallin (eBay) for $200. I'm new to all this but it seems a bargin if you wanted to replace your old pair.

While thats true, I am very very hard on shoes. Manage to kill lesser brands in under 6 months. I recently got 2 years out of a pair of SL's.

All depends on the type of walking you do. If your a track walker, these shoes are not for you!! If you walk offtrack on alot of rock, they are an excellent choice.

I am very happy with my Scarpas, well into my 4th pair.
Each to their own, some love, some hate, some indifferent, some don't know. Sure, they're not for everyone. But for what I do (and others as indicated), they're great.

Ill just wait for some Ultralight weight thongs, 150gms $400 and then my footwear will be lighter than everyones, and therefore the best for all conditions.

My new boots weigh 1650g and I consider them light for the purpose I bought them for.
My old boots had so many leaks that after my last wet walk in them they each weighed 1600g the next day, they felt pretty heavy by the time I got back to the car!

I think John's referring to research on the effect of heavier boots and how it has been equated to additional pack weight. This guy has compiled some of the research.

Of course if you're hiking in rough Tassie scrub then protecting your feet and not wearing out your boots quickly is a bigger concern...

I had a pair of Raichle boots which didn't fit me properly and tore up my feet at the beginning of a three day hike. In desperation I borrowed a pair of crocs from my mate's wife (which were a striking bright purple) and hiked in those for the rest of the walk. Apart from feeling stones through the thin soles and smiling bravely whenever we met other hikers they worked pretty damned well !

I'd wear crocs in tassie scrub over Raichle's ANY day

Those Lowa and Meindl have a good reputation, i don't recall seeing them in tassie, i'd imagine there would be a dealer up your way somewhere? I doubt many here would know much about them, Scarpa took off in my era, what else was there? good boots though.. anyhow, Baffin/Borneo, look similar don't they..I like the high rubber rand, could get a bit hot maybe? Good thinking to avoid goretex though (imo)
