Boots etc, for kids?

Hi all.
Wondering, when you take your kids on a walk, what they wear on their feet.
Wanting to introduce a 9 year old to the great outdoors and looking to buy some boots for her.
I saw some at the local Kathmandu shop, HERE.
As usual with the K pricing, $119 (cough splutter), down to $59.

There's another pair of boots over in Ulverstone, THESE.
The size of the pair they have is a 2-3, that is a UK 2 or a US 3, and that's just too small - need one size up.
But when you go to the website for Gondwana (above link), they aren't available in any size smaller than 5-6.
(So I don't know how the Ulverstone store managed to get a 2-3).

What other options are out there for kids boots size UK3 or US4, that are affordable as a starting point ($50 - $60)?

And what do you do for kids when it comes to gaiters?
One store went to pick up the ankle gaiters until I told them what they were. Another suggested rolling down a normal pair of gaiters, but you would think that they would still be rather roomy on little legs...

Hi Adam,

I'll let you know later today what I find. My local store, Amazon Outdoors, has a very knowledgeable walker as a manager who's in his late 50's and has been walking for 40 years every weekend. Knows the Blue Mountains and Sydney area backwards, I'm doing gaiters mainly for the mud that I'm expecting - snake season's almost over, especially in Vic, with lowish temps.. However, better safe than sorry.

Today, I'm doing the final kitting out of a 9y.o. for a 6 day walk starting Tues (I'll be on the Bass Strait, not too far from you - final bits'n'pieces only - gaiters and a bit better pack than his school pack (sticks out 16" behind his back.)

I've got a set of Gondwana boots for him - came from a Amazon Outdoors as well , but he's a bigger foot, US7

Just rescued an almost unused pair of boots from our Vinnies donation pile - Columbia size UK3.5 US5.5 Eur36.5 Ankle length (mid cut) (my boys have outgrown them, and my in-laws and family don't want them.)

PM me your address - if of interest, might swap you for a bit of Tyvek. If you do want them, will need to know by 8am Mon, as I'm leaving 10am for Victoria/Bass Strait. I'll be off the air for a fair few days.

My kids are a lot younger than that, so this may not apply...

We started them walking in knee-high zip-up dress boots. They were the only thing that we could find for 2-3 year olds that was even close to suitable. They were waterproof and there was no need to worry about mud or gaiters (they loved walking through the mud).

Now they wall in elastic-side short boots (eg, Blundstones). Not as high or waterproof, but perfectly good for small kids who don't weigh much. Have to try to keep them out of the mud a bit more now.

I buy goretex boots for my daughter from LLBean, in the US. They are fully waterproof, built tough like adult boots, and stand up to Tassie conditions. She's on her 4th pair. I wouldn't recommend anything else I've seen around here for a kid in Tassie.

Is there a Rivers Shop in Tas? A friend of mine just got her children some cheap boots from Rivers outlet shop for about $30. I am sure they would fall to bits after a few walks but chances are she would outgrow them just as quick.

I do have my Scarpas for sale but a lot more dollars ($180 +post) and size 38 so maybe just too big.

I have a pair of near new (last worn in 1994 by my Daughter ) Tatonka Gaiters that should fit a 9 year old, you can have .

I found this, I know nothing more about Rivers apart from what I wrote above. At this price might be worth a try.
