It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Hi Moondog

Yes I have used these guys, have been happy with them but shipping is expensive. I have some of the standard 1.1oz silnylon. I could send you an offcut/ a few yards if you like.

This thread may be of interest: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin ... d_id=34234

I have enough silnylon for now but would get a few bits and bobs if you are ordering ... I just need to get my act together and start sewing!

I'd be interested in going in with an order. Assuming it will cost less including postage from vic to qld.

OK lets see what the best postage rate is, what are you after? I was thinking of the grey ultrasil
but could go with the seconds as it is cheaper, although I may want some white and some blaze orange as well

Sil-nylon from Quest outfitters

Postby Bluegum Mic » Wed 23 Mar, 2011 11:42 am

Hmmm I could be a goer to (if it helps make it more economical for you). I've always wanted to try make some stuff. I'll go with what ever the consensus (ie colour weight etc though the orange does sound funky :-) I'd prob be after 5 yards.

I'd be after a few bits and pieces. Probably some of the grey ultrasil and maybe some other colour aswell. Orange is fine. I'd be interested in getting some bits and pieces of other fabrics and some plastic hardware aswell though. So yeah. Not sure if it's worth going in together. I'll put together a shopping list tonight.

Well we better get a group buy organised, if it will fit in the US large box i think we can get postage for $55-
I'll contact them and ask, small lots will fit in a 500gram prepaid I imagine otherwise $10.40? for a 3kg prepaid satchel

The first time I ordered from these guys I got a measly two yards of fabric + a fair few bits and bobs. Total weight was definately sub 500g and shipping was only $12 from the US. It fitted in an envelope that is approximately A4 sized.

I just got an email from Quest, the service so far has been good with all questions promptly answered.
Here is a copy of the email

Hi, Below are some shipping costs and estimates for fabric amount of silnylon. Insurance included if lost or damaged.

Express mail flat rate envelop, about 25 yards= $32.37

Priority mail flat rate box, about 35 yards= $54.46

There isn't too much difference between the regular silnylon and ultrasil (minor wt difference/minor strength difference). If saving money is important (it would be with me) I'd go with the regular silnylon "2nds". I made my tarp out of the 2nds silnylon. If you have any other questions just let us know. Kim, Quest Outfitters

So splitting a 35 yard order seems to be the go at a $1.57 a yard

That is $1.57/yard for postage cost of course, quite a bit cheaper, at this time I am thinking of 2nds
including a 15 yard order of the blaze orange with the resistant light weight coating as that would bring the price down to $3.45 a yard

I am still up for it, althought 4 yards will do - I am planning to add some grommits and use it as a multi-purpose tarp.

Out of interest what are you other guys planning to do with the Silnylon? Tarp? Tent? Tarptent? Adding any noseeum?

One tarp for summer use, a fly-over top for my Fairydown Plateau to protect the nylon from UV and a survival poncho tarp for my hunting kit and perhaps a biggish sun shelter fly if there is enough cash in my account
Andrew I don't think 4yards is enough for a tarp, that length would not keep my feet dry, 5 would be better 6 much better, but 6 yards @ $6.35 is about $50 including a share of postage cost
BTW I have an excess of lightweight 25mm polyester tape here if anybody wants any for loops and tiedown points.

I have dreams of a tipi/mid come tarptent. I was planning a one person mid and then sew in a floor for half the bottom and other half is vesituble. Then I would have a nosee um door down the middle of the. I will post pics when done ...

So yes I will be adding some noseeum.

Hey Moondog

Ok..did some more research and will change my mind (again)! Back to 6 yards.

I was considering the configs used by the Tarpology guy -check it out.

..and I was also looking at this one -

- both would require me to do some stitching if we are getting 6' wide material.

Am also interested in some of the tie-down materials...

Sorry to hear about your unplanned free time, Moondog!

Perhaps like me you spend too much time thinking about the design of your next shelter ... Rather than your job! :)

My boss said that I paid too much attention to my customers ( retirement village ) and not enough attention to making money, it is really hard feeding people for $4- a day

I may still go ahead and put in a minimum order tho while I still have some cash in the bank

That sucks Moondog, it sucks that it is run in such an unrealistic way.

I just had a thought, has anyone asked Terra Rosa gear if they will sell by the metre? I think the guy is on the forum sometimes but I can't remember his name?

Thanks for the thought Maelgwn, but I dont keep stock of any sil at the moment. What I do is order a set lenght and then do a run of an item or items. If someone wants a custom bit of kit done then I either place an order or source the material as needed which is why I quote up to 14 days. I sometime have to extend it depending on where the goods are coming from and how big the item to be made it.

Cheers :)

I just received an order from Quest for 3 yards of the grey Ultrasil and 5 of the 2nd's in the orange. Shipping was pretty cheap for standard international mail. Just takes a bit longer. The orange is very very bright. lol I want to have a go at making a ground sheet for a wild oasis that converts to a pack cover.

I got some of the orange silnylon seconds from Qwest last month. I'd rate it at snowgoggles bright, MOondog :) )

Good service. Inexpensive postage. Delivery took around 12 days.
