MSR gear online

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

MSR gear online

As previously mentioned on this forum it can be hard to find a US based online retailer that will sell MSR /Thermarest overseas, and in some cases using a "forwarding" service like PriceUSA.com.au is needed. But I have just noticed that Altrec.com will ship certain MSR products overseas that are noted with a "worldwide" symbol next to the item, particulalry quite a few of their stoves. Also I have managed to order a couple of MSR items via Amazon.com with no problems too.

Thanks for the tip on Basegear. I have used their site to buy other brands of equipment. Many sites seem to run hot or cold on the Cascade products MSR/ThermaRest/Platypus, I have bought several MSR bits from Moontrails then last time i got the dreaded "cannot ship MSR overseas" line. Also Amazon appears to get their camping gear from a 3rd person supplier. How much info they pass on to the 3rd person supplier in regards to the products end destination I dont know. But for now Altrec.com and Amazon seem to be on the OK list, oh and just a quick note Amazons shippings costs are very resonable compared to other suppliers. I bought 3 sets of 8 MSR groundhog pegs with shipping only $15!

There's a really good UK site - ultralight Outdoor Gear that sells good quality outdoor gear online, including a good range of MSR gear.
Very competitive prices, less VAT and cheap postage and very professional.

I tried using a mail forwarding service (shipito)to get some Northface and MSR stuff sent over. There were a few sites that tried to submit orders through that could obviously pick up that I was an international customer even though I was using a US shipping and billing address. The system just wouldn't authenticate my order. Moosejaw was one of the ones that wouldnt work. Most probably because Cascade Designs list tham as an official seller. I had no problems using Shipito with Oregon Mountain Community.

Not forgetting that there are benefits to supporting your local physical shop.

Should you have a warrantee issue it would be rude to then take it back into your local shop after buying online.

Try using http://www.priceusa.com.au/.

Havent used them myself but there are many positive comments on whirlpool.net.au. The US agent purchases the goods on your behalf so there are no location type issues

They arent bad, more expensive than direct though (from the sources above). A bit of a search for the product name usually finds someone willing to sell. UK shipping is generally cheaper than US. ebay (US and UK) is also worth a try, many will ship even if they dont bother listing OS in the postage options (not a lot of incentive to do so in their big markets?)

Is it the local shops issue or the big nasty distributors issue? Doesn't the local shop spend 5minutes max chasing up the distributor who picks up the cost of the faulty product? Thats how it worked when I was in retail. I like supporting the local shop but when they can't get things at wholesale less than what I can get from overseas it makes life tuff for the local.

I haven't had a problem with Moosejaw buying North Face childrens items not available here. Used a US shipping address and supplied my Australian address as the billing address. I had a problem when I used a US billing address because it didn't match my credit card details. I've used campsaver, moosejaw and sierra successfully.
