I recently bought two Firesteel (the brand) rods and a striker from Going Gear

Works better (in a few quick trials...) than the Light My Fire version.
Easier to strike ( I can use the spine of my Opinel knife) and bigger blobs of sparks. Very happy with that.
I just attached a small lanyard (a piece of mason cord) with about 10cm of duct tape to about 1/3rd of it.

I put my vasaline coated cotton balls in a zip lock bag. can still use them successfuly 12 mths later. Also, antibacterial hand sanitizer (with alchol) is great for starting fires especially with a firesteel.

i've had one of these firesteels for a year or so now.. it works great. i don't think there is much difference between this and one of the more expensive ones.
