Gear for the OT in late October (Solo)

Postby farkewie » Wed 11 Aug, 2010 9:52 pm

Hi Guys and Gals,

So I have pretty much decided to do the OT in the last week of October (solo).

I think I have most the gear i need, but im looking at getting a new Tent for the walk ( I plan on sleeping in it most nights). I understand the weather may be at its worst but thats the idea.:-)

I was looking at the TarpTents, Scarp1 or moment. What do you guys think? My other thought was to get a full 4 season tent I can use in some nice exposed positions next year. not really sure what though... IT would be a 1 man tent as light and compact as possible (within reason)

Cheers -

Ty.

G'day Ty,
Scarp1 with cross poles should do the job for you and it is rated 4 season set up with them, also gives you a lot more room than the Moment.
You will need a Foot print/ground sheet and you can get a Tyveck one from Henry when you buy the Scarp.

Thanks,

I do like the look of it.

What interior option would you go for? mesh, closed or both?

Hey Ty,

Im hiking it the same week, how are you finding transfers to/from start/finish of hike? Theres very limited services until the start of the season.

Have found a great transfer company but they are fairly pricey unless you have more people. (Am hiking with one other)
Just putting it out there - is there anyone else looking for transfers in late october? Thinking launceston to cradle mountain sat 23 oct and out from lake st claire the following sat or so, not concrete yet.

I too have heard great things about the scarp1, v lightweight and fits the bill for a solo hiker. a friend who's done a fair bit of hiking and snowcamping back country has opted for the scarp1.

Yeah, I've got some friends who were staying at a cabin there last night for a holiday. Snowed in now. Lucky sods! :-)

Well, they did go with the hope of playing in the snow.

Holy Dooley!

I'm starting my OT trek in the first week of Oct. Anybody know numbers on accumulation. Geez, down to 200 meters is a pretty good dump.

Still can't wait to get out there.

You can always have a look hereto get some idea. That site tends to overestimate the amount of snow, but it gives a bit of an idea. The thing to remember about snow in Tassie is that is is very unpredictable. We can have a big dump one day and the next day it's all gone. Or it can hang around for a while if conditions are right. But it's very hard to predict and we don't have a lot of monitoring of snow conditions. The most you can say is that you could get heaps of snow in Oct, or none at all. Keep monitoring the forecasts right up until you start, but be prepared for the worst conditions just in case.

Cheers,

Thanks alliecat that site is certainly helpful. I am prepared for anything. I'm going with some first time hikers and I think I'm equally concerned with snowfall and accumulation. The Cradle Mountain web cam doesn't seem to work on my mac.
It would be good to get an update on how much has accumlated closer to the trip. I guess thats as simple as a call to the rangers.

I just noticed on that site it offers accumulation as well. doh!
