TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Information on needed Mountain Designs Alpine Bunker tent

Firstly Hi i'm Tom and I'm new to this site.

Not new to camping but I am quite inexperienced in camping in the snow which is what I would like to start doing. As such I have been looking around for a decent quality tent and I found myself very content with how the description read for the Mountain Designs 3p Alpine Bunker tent. But the reviews on their page were quite dismal to say the least there was more 1 and 2 star ratings then the 3,4 and 5 star columns combined. That said no one had bothered to leave a detailed review so it's hard to tell if the people leaving these reviews had any experience or if they even knew what they where talking about.

So what I'm asking is has anyone here had any experience with this tent and could they advise me if it's worth buying.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone's had any experience with one too. Well, with MD tents in general actually.

I know it's not what you asked, but I do own a One Planet Wurley 3. I bought this as I needed something extremely strong with the winds I generally camp in, and that you often get down Omeo Valley. It's used by the outdoor ed kids and those tents cop a beating most days of the year. I can confirm it's a damn well made tent. These come in a snow configuration and might be worth considering too. They are more expensive, but also considerably lighter. It might be worth considering as a comparison or if you can't get any good feedback on the MD tent.

You do have to have your doubts when a $2k- tent is selling full price for $699- and less when on sale.
Without having seen and inspected one in store I suspect it uses cheap alloy poles and not poles made using a high grade alloy from one of the respected makers.
Generally when good poles are used that information is prominent in the blurb

At the Mountain Design site it's $550 , club member price . join for free...
Odd that they post the review ratings but not the text , not that I could see how .
Same thing on the Anaconda site (same parent company) but they sell it at $699.
I just noticed the colour : lemon chrome.

I will look at that tent Dexter sounds amazing.

Moondog55 i didn't realise that it was a 2k tent how did you find that out i xan barely find any info on it anywhere not even a review on youtube.

Franco Thats where i was looking at it on there site i joined the club and was a about to purchase when i had a brain wave to check the ratings. The reason that there is no written reviews is no one has written them when they do write one i shows up automatically. Annaconda uses the same system.

Most brand name expedition tents to fit 3 people are costing about that $2k-, I was trying to point out that it was a bit too cheap to be believably strong enough for an Aussie white season.
Have a look at the Mont Epoch for example. I don't rate most 2P tents as being suitable for 2 full grown males with winter mats and warm sleeping bags, most are really 1+ tents.
Australian winters up in the white country can at times be really harsh and we have the disadvantage of wet and therefore very heavy snow, it takes a very strong tent to withstand such loading.

Why don't you look at the scarp 2?

Will set you back about $600-650 aud delivered and it's a proven high wind and snow loading performer. (With crossing poles/solid inner). Can probably leave the crossing poles at home most times unless you're expecting a heavy snow dump.

The MD tent is very heavy if you're planning to carry it, even divided by two people.
