We can dream... Next significant walking idea

It's autumn and walking season. Apart from all the local tracks, have you been thinking and planning of a significant walk in the future? Perhaps something caught your attention in a magazine, blog or Youtube?

Mine? Multi-day trek of Jiankou section of the Great Wall. A wild and spectacular section just north of Beijing. UL is a must for the challenges posed. Dreaming of wild camps on the Great Wall...

I would quite like to walk across the last few pieces of the Blue Mountains (from Penrith to Lithgow) that I haven't yet done.

Over the years, I've done various day-walks (accessible by train) that link Penrith to Springwood, and Lawson to Lithgow. So I just have to find a way to get from Springwood to Lawson. There's not an obvious walking route between Springwood and Lawson, so I might need to go from Glenbrook to Wentworth Falls, but that's extremely long for a day-walk.

I usually seem to spend more time daydreaming about places I could go than actually walking... I think I need to do something about it!

My longstanding plan for the future is the Dusky Track in New Zealand, but I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon.

Ribuck, I think it'd be possible with a generous dose of bush bashing. Good luck if you do try to forge a connection from Springwood to Lawson- id be interested to read a trip report!

LOVE the Great Wall idea!

I too spend far more time daydreaming about hikes than actually hiking. It's a sad state of affairs. I think I'd like to take on the AAWT or the Hume and Hovell trail (though I don't know much about it yet - first heard about it just a few days ago) but they're both very pie in the sky. I'd love to get back to Peru and do more than just the Inca Trail and Colca Canyon. Everywhere, really. There's so much to see, but as a parent of young kids it won't be happening for a good while. This is why I love reading other people's stories.

Pieman Heads to Temma, North Norfolk Range (Hazelton, Lily, Woody, etc), Meredith Range, Livingstone, Parsons Hood, etc etc etc.

Although the Eastern Arthurs would suffice. And Denisons/Curly/Innes High Rocky. And the Frankland/Wilmot traverse, including Giblin and the Folded Range and the White Monoliths and . . .

Been dreaming about getting back into through walking since we had our first born 10 years ago. The kids cut their teeth up to Mueller hut in NZ last year, and we knocked over Hinchinbrook this year in a mix of cyclone Debbie rain and sunshine. They are proving to be quite resilient and adventurous. Local dreams are Teviot to Spicers in this coming June and plenty of Girraween slab bivouacs with a bit of abseiling here and there. Mcallister Crk to Ooline Crk in Sundown NP is also on the wish list. A mate has discovered a 6 pitch abseil down a water fall not far from Brissie, so keen to have to recie on that before we send the kids down it. Would like to do the Western Authors in the next couple of years along with Mt Ann while we are there. OLT in April and come from Walls of Journalism again. Basically if we could revisit all the stuff we did before kids in the next few years before high school than that would be a dream come true. If we can/did do it the kids sure can.

Earnslaw Burn Glacier in NZ is on the radar for sure. And have always thought/wanted to do Routeburn as its always in 10 best or 100 must do's before dyeing publications, but dislike the cost and the crowds. Been dreaming up a little sleep over on Mt Ngauruhoe as part of taking in the luna landscape of Tongriro crossing if we make the Nth Isl. I find NZ is endless with back country adventure and very possible to loose the crowds. Like Lewis Pass to St Arnard via Waiau Pass and Lake Constance, a cracking multi day with no one around. It was solid but also very rewarding.

Would love to do 6 to 12 months on the the West and central West central side of the USA, zig zagging from California up to Canada. Get a reliable basic set of wheels and walk everything we can get our hands on from deserts to upper snow line. The dreams are endless with nature being is the inspiration. I see it as my religion and I don't mind being an extremist in my own little way.

The wife asked me what I want do for my 50th in a couple years, raft the Franklin and do the Frenchmans Cap excursion I replied. I'm getting older and creaky, but the aches and pain seems insignificant when we top out of something after a solid push. Just love it, and the kids seem to as well.

My 50th in a couple of years as well. I want to walk the John Muir, though I seriously doubt it will be in my birthday month which is Feb.I think there would still be too much snow and ice. I would be happy with any time in that year, better start planning soon I guess.

I am planning the AAWT for Spring. Walking with my dad, another gentleman and maybe another person or two if we can recruit someone Leaving my husband and three young kids behind for nearly 8 weeks.

Ive been dreaming alot lately of the next walk. The old man turns 50 in 2 years so I'm hoping to take him to Alaska and hike/pack raft from the sheenjek river to a friends lodge on the edge of the mountain range. I've been a few times and he's loved the pics. His turn now.

Also wouldn't mind doing the g20 in Corsica. Currently working with a dude who was based there in the legion. Some good mountains there.

Finally getting out of Tassie in July. Larapinta end to end has me very excited!

Tassie trips planned when snow/conditions ok.
Walls/OLT from McKenzie.
Tarkine coast via Norfolks.
Crossing/Davey packraft trip.
Meredith Range traverse.
Curly/Battlement hills circuit.
Greystone and/or White Monoliths.

I had plans for the PCT last winter, these three long walks look like such a diverse experience, each alone and between them.

My knees weren't up to the carry but did end up completing the CDT bike route (3mths) last October.
An adventure in itself though would loved to have been on the tops more often, was a bit envious of the intrepid few walkers met along the way.

Wow, the whole enchilada..! an elite group, biggest one last.. good luck, some surprisingly remote rugged country along that way.

For the rest of this year the plan is:
- Light to Light walk 3 days in May.
- Larapinta in July/August 15-18 days.
- Hill Top - Katoomba in September (10 days) because I haven't done the bit between Yerranderie and the Kowmung before. Will most probably go via Colong Caves and Uni Rover Trail.
- Hotham to Walhalla (15 days) to complete the AAWT in October.
- All the 2k peaks in knp over 9 days in November-December.

Ah well - that bit can be a shade boring, especially compared to everything else on that route. There is a lot of hard road.

Agree Roger - I have never found any joy in the thought of bashing along Scotts Main Range which is why I think an extra day or two via Colong Caves and the Uni Rover Trail is likely to be far more enjoyable. I also find the alternate route from Murphy's Crossing and then the Centre Ridge FT more pleasant than the Sheepwalk (don't tell the water board).

Suz, you may find that the Via Francigena would suit you better. The route runs from Canterbury (England) to Rome, although not all parts are suitable for walking nowadays.

I have only walked a small part of it, but walking the sections from San Gimignano (in Tuscany) to Siena and then on to Rome would be scenic and historic, and very satisfying.

Ribuck! I have just been reading about it. Thanks And there is also apparently the way of St Benedict in Umbria and another that runs from Rome to Compostela.

Did you do a trip report of your time on the VF? If so, please point me to it so I can live vicariously in your past, like an intrusive little time traveller.

There are also the European Long Distance paths and number 1, although not very realistic, is a fantasy of mine in addition to historical and other paths in Europe.

My aim for next year is to walk the Camino de Santiago. I am not quite sure which one yet but I am thinking the Camino De Nort
