How many backpacks do you have?

I am trying to figure out how many different sizes of backpacks I need. I am actually thinking of getting a 40 and a 50 litre ones. I already have a 20.

And you guys? How many do you have? When do you use them?

I saw there is a brand called Quecha from a website decathlon.com.au have you ever heard that brand before?

18L Day pack...Used in conjunction with a harness rig for SES searches
45L pack...spare pack, long day hikes, quick overnights
50L pack...my go to hiking pack
110L Large Alice Pack...when I have to hump stuff in (amateur radio, large first aid kits, team gear, ropes etc)

a Macpac 30L used for regular training walks and day walks,
a Macpac 40L only used so far for Overseas travel,
a new 60L Klymit which is a tight squeeze for me at the moment - but a work in progress [Used for a 3 day hike in the Vic Alps when combined with my detachable Karijini lid for a little extra space];
and my "go-to" bag - a 95L Karijini weighing in at 3.2kg.
I also have a really old basic canvas pack that was frameless and made for rock climbers, probably around the 65L mark. Great weight and basically indestructible, but really needs a chest strap added so I can perch a camera bag in front.

3 that I use regularly: an osprey day pack, ULA ohm for up to a few days and OP WBA for longer or rougher trips. Like most people also have s2s ultra sil daypacks for side trips. Also have an old Cascade 75L that I don't use anymore and will probably give away

To the OP. Getting one of 40 and 50L packs is probably unnecessary. There's not much difference in them. For many, the multiple packs often related to the particular style and design than the capacity, one that particularly suited certain intended use. So suggest you think about your applications before thinking about the number of packs. The 50L pack can easily be used for 40L purpose.

Good point there on the 40+50L similarity GPS.

Its hard to determine the volume if you lay out all your gear and look at it, with big variables depending on what you've got so pick a 50?

In my limited experience I can fit my 2 night mild weather gear in a 34L with the tent strapped on the bottom of the pack.


I have an Osprey Meridian 60L (40+20) for traveling. Wheels and handle and backpack harness (thought that might be handy but usually take it out to fit more in). Also the 40L part alone can count as carry-on if they are not checking weight.

Osprey Stratos 34L for long day walk or 2 nighters.

STS ultrasil 20L have used as carry-on and take as a spare.

Camelbak MULE about 11L plus 3L bladder for day walks and also used as carry-on.

On my wishlist before winter is an Exped Lightning 45L which should give me an extra 11L of space for winter gear and/or more food. Id only go bigger if i was looking at 1 week plus no resupply.

I think that pretty much covers any amount of stuff that I would ever carry.

If I had to pick a favourite, it would probably be the Golite.

And I still have my old Lowe Alpine Troilet 80L that I saved up for and bought in 1982, when I was 13. I haven't had the heart to get rid of it. It cost me $148.

To answer the original query
20 litres is a good around town and good weather day pack size.
30 to 35 for cold weather day trips
Mountain walking or skiing I always recommend something around 35 to 45 litres for the white season
Overnite/weekends that 35 to 45 litres is doable; especially if you have add-on pockets/pouches as I do.
Long good weather touring with room for all the needed stuff 60 to 75
Winter I use a 110 litre pack [ WE Alpine Expedition Large] and sometimes add all the external pockets [1* 8litres + 3 * 5litres] and the throat extension bumping it right up to about 155 litres at which weight and volume it is very hard for me to carry let alone ski with, but doable for short distances to set up a base camp
Ultralighters can knock 20% off those volumes for short trips; especially if the weather is kind and stable but at a higher cost in new UL gear

Just remember you can carry a small amount of gear in a big pack [ with discipline of course] but it is difficult to carry a large amount of gear in a small pack

Too many, probably exacerbated because I rarely seem to get rid of anything.
72 litre GoLite Pinnacle for anything overnight or longer.
42 litre WE Contour largish daypack, my go to pack for many things. Currently travelling with me in NZ.
32 litre Aarn Natural Exhilaration that currently doesn't get a lot of use.
Camelbak MULE mainly for MTB rides now and then.
Older 30 litre Berghaus Dart 30, well worn but still gets occasional use.
20 litre Deuter Speedlite 20 day pack becoming my go to for fast and light day trips.
Carribee compact expandable daypack, sometimes quite useful.
15 litre small Black Wolf day pack now semi retired.
4 different portable pocket packs for travel and other uses.
2 large bum bags, each big enough for minimalist day walks.
1 large White Mountain bum bag that converts to a 20 litre daypack.
3 smaller bum bags.

Not mentioning the High Sierra pack I commute to the office with and the spare one of those.

My thoughts - Look for something 65 litres plus, robust but reasonably lightweight, for anything overnight or longer. If you are planning big snow trips you probably need a bigger pack. A larger daypack, 30 litres plus, is useful for day walks where more gear needs to be carried - alpine, really cold, wet etc. You might also be able to judiciously use it for lightweight overnight trips. Something light around 20 litres is usually good for a wide range of other day trips.

Ha! Lots. I make them myself for specific purposes - eg ski touring/ packrafting/ ultralight overnight/daypack etc. and we have 4 kids who variously want to come bushwalking , so there are many in our household.

Moondog, I have an old Triolet - they were good in their time, but the padding in the lumbar area, and the shoulder straps can be much better.

I've got just three, not counting smaller packs for day walks. Sometimes a large daypack works fine for an 1-2 night trip though. I've got a pack dedicated for rock climbing gear and also a haulbag, but neither of those are really appropriate for walks.

For bushwalking I have a 40-45L lightweight pack (600g) for most summer trips.
And then I have two really old 65 liter packs which I use for longer trips and in the winter.

Both of the 65L packs are old. One is twenty years old and has been falling apart for years. It is patched and duct taped and repaired on top of repairs. Recently it ripped in a new and very disturbing way and I had to retire it. The other pack is made of tougher fabric but is thirty years old. It's also in bad shape.

I can afford to buy a new pack but in the last fifteen years of looking I have not been able to find one that I like. Now I'm forced to buy one -- or make my own. I still can't find one that I like so I will be starting down the rabbit hole of pack making soon. Alternatively I may choose to utilize parts of the twenty year old pack that are still okay (the back and frame section) and replace all of the badly UV damaged fabric and straps. That's still a lot of work but probably easier than making a pack from scratch.

Anyway, practically speaking I really only need two multi-day sized packs: roughly 45L and 65L.

Aarn Marathon Magic 22l - My go to day pack for bushwalking - I love the accessibility of the front pockets.
Osprey 10l - Mainly for my wife for bushwalks, but I take it on longish urban walks 10ks + (wet weather gear and water for both of us).
Deuter Giga Bike 23l - Take to work / travel pack.

We are yet to get into overnight trips, so the whole 60l+ pack thing is yet to be explored.

Have just two
- ULA Circuit
- Sea to Summit waterproof daypack

Used to own a Deuter Air Contact 55+10. Was a great pack, had bottom opening and very well built. But just too heavy at 2.5kg.

My wife has a ULA Circuit and a Deuter Air Contact 60+10. She just tried the ULA for the first time last week (7 day trip) and said she'll never go back to the heavy, traditional type pack.

Cheap eBay 100ltr pack when I started out and for training purposes.
Karrimor sf 60-100 for its heavy duty properties and size. It's my go to pack.
Ula epic for when I travelled to Alaska and when I'm concerned about weight.

Decathlon is a large french chain and Quecha is their house brand. I had not realised they had started a au branch. They are a bit like Anaconda/Kathmandu without the super ridiculous retail prices, reasonable gear for occasional use but not top end.

I have two camelbaks, one 25l one which is my day pack/goto bag for getting about. The other is 42 litres which I use for a daypack at the snow and 1-2nigh bag during summer. I have a 48l pack for summer use but I got that cheap when a camping shop was closing and it will probably get more use from my daughters. I have a 60l seatek warhorse pack for multi day walking and my old Alice pack from being in the army which doesn't see use these days but probly will when I get into multi day BC XC skiing.
