TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Yesterday was interesting.

Climbing down from The Bluff - which was a wee bit icy on the upper sections - I kind of slipped and fell. 10' drop, 5' slide, another 10' drop. Really though I was done for but, thanks to luck and a conveniently placed little lump on an otherwise sheer, icy rock, got out of it shaken and winded but without even a bruise (well, I haven't found one yet . . . ). Landed partly on the back, more on the side, with the pack and its contents taking the impact - and the 1.5L SIGG water bottle in the side pocket catching on that little lump of rock stopping me long enough to grab a tree root and stop the descent.

Didn't realise how much of an impact it must have been until unpacking back at the car. Give me a SIGG over those silly little plastic things any day:

Fortunately the camera gear was all tucked away in its bag, which is carried in front, so no damage there.

It's pretty well padded, so probably not a great deal of damage.

Of course. It was a wonderful day.

I was planning an overnighter, McDonald to Clear and back, from Low Saddle Road, but got held up with 'domestic' issues until midday Saturday. Then I thought of doing a shorter one-day loop and coming down via the Nobs Track. But there was all that snow up on The Bluff and it was tooooo tempting. No-one around all day long . . . :)

Brilliant, except for having to dodge all the snow-bunnies on their way home from Buller. :x

But if you had one of these, you wouldn't have a beat up water bottle.
The other thing I have heard about metal type bottles is that once they are dented, the plastic coating (or whatever it is) inside the bottle can crack, causing liquid to touch the metal and begin corrosion.
That's what happened to my wife's sigg when it got dented.

Here is what you have to do to break a Naglene...
If you dare.

Piffle. I bet it would have cracked on impact. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place . . .

My boyfriend and a mate were abseiling into the gorge at Mt Buffalo on their way to do a climb when they discovered an abandoned 1L nalgene on a ledge, half full. They decided to drop it to the ground, some 50 odd metres away to see what would happen... arrive at the ground and said bottle is in perfect working order. I'm very much a nalgene supporter.

I've never tested my Naglene (or Snowgum version of it), but I have had a Sigg spring a leak, they are not terribly good against puncturing from sharp objects. Now I just use PET, tough, cheap and light. :D

Neither am I. Only time I've had a leak is when some numpty at work put my old bottle - full - in the freezer.

*groam*
I think I spoke too soon about the 'not even a bruise' bit. I've been discovering sore spots all down my right side over the past two days. Ahh well, it was still a good day. And the dent in the bottle does make it easier for my undersized hands to grip.

Bruises and sore bits normally come out on older folks a bit later

I'm not that old. Only middle-aged. Still have decades ahead of me.
I hope.
