If anyone is up for some nude bushwalking around Sydney let me know (although we probably won't be doing too many more trips before it warms up again).

We did a great walk, with a skinny dip and some nude yoga, about two weeks back in the lower mountains. Even with the autumn chill in the air it is most pleasant when you're in the sunshine.

My friend, the yoga teacher, wrote up an article about our latest adventure: http://fatcanyoners.org/2013/04/21/nude ... uka-brook/

This is not a smart *&%$#! question, but is it actually legal to walk naked in a public access area like a NP?

Hey mate, I'm no lawyer but this is my understanding (I'm actually hoping to get a lawyer friend to pull something together on this topic as I'm often asked)...

Firstly, it varies from state to state. In NSW the actual offence you could be charged with is "obscene exposure" under the Summary Offences Act. Even in the case of informal nude beaches (where there is no legal protection for nudity) there are very few examples of people being prosecuted. Where they have been the case has normally been dismissed by a magistrate. Of course, if there's no-one there to make a complaint you've got no problem (hence my choice of less-visited areas, and usually doing the walks mid-week). Even if you did run into someone, and they did take offence, without the police actually witnessing the "crime" they are unlikely to prosecute. Even if through a huge run of bad luck occurs, and all these things combine, a fine would probably be the absolute worst you would suffer. The point of this law is to stop people flashing etc, which is a far more aggravated offence than simply strolling through the bush nude (where there is no intent to be obscene or indecent).

So technically it more than likely is illegal. Dont get me wring. Im all for doing what makes you happy(although an errant low twig in the jewls wouldn't make me happy), just thought the legal rammifacations would be off putting.

I'm a big fan of the model of bushwalking legendary walker Wilf Hilder did. He apparently had the record for the number of fines for walking in the Lake Burragorang water catchment. Not only did he refuse to pay them, he was instrumental in getting a walking route opened up through the middle of it. If you're not hurting anyone and the law is outdated, bugger it. Obviously not everyone is the same, but that's how I operate.

More power to you FC, but if I turned up at a remote location and found a dozen nude strangers saluting the sun I wouldn't be impressed.
Having said that I nude up on the odd occasion, most notably a 40 degree day with Lake Rhona to myself. Pretty spesh.
Can't say I see the attraction of walking the track nude though you've still got a pack and boots on presumably?

A pack yes. I've started going barefoot on the last couple walks. I find I can walk 7 or 8 kms, even on rough rocky ground, before the feet start getting sore. I'd like to push further than that. You walk a little slower barefoot, but it does complete the sensual experience of being nude that you don't get with boots / shoes still on.

There are barefoot shoes you can purchase that gives you the same sensation. Such as Xero shoes and unshoes.

Please dont think Im against it. By all means no. Was purely interested in whether it was legal or not. Not if it was moral or immoral.

Finding that many people anywhere in the bush would cheese me off, regardless of their clothing.

Finding a dozen people in the bush is bad
Finding the nude is worse
Finding them saluting is odd
Finding that 'saluting' is a euphemism is downright awkward

I actually had one go at it on my own in the Minerva Hills. I pretty much knew I was up there alone and, early on the way back I stopped for a natural break and thought, "why not drop all my gear?". So I did for about a kilometre, certainly was different. For some reason I put my clothes back on then and, about 400 metres further on, came across a couple ascending and I greeted them with a most cheesy grin, safe in the knowledge that my timing was perfect.
Cheers all.

I have enjoyed this thread so much. Particularly loved that the first few posts were all incognito. Love the idea of your sneaky nude walk, almost busted.

I think walking past a nude person in the bush would make my day... and my kids would find it hilarious, it would give us something to talk about for the rest of the walk.... Although convincing my kids that they are not going to walk naked might be a different story.
