Hi all i have just bought the MSR Hubba Hubba HP for a some hiking trips. Now that it is here im thinking that it is not big enough for the two of us.
Im 6'1 and a big guy, with the two of us sleeping head to toe we fit well but there is no room left for the packs.
There is a annex both sides where you can put the packs but im thinking that i want a slightly larger tent maybe a 2-3 or a 3 man.
But ive looked a heap and they get heavy when you get to that size. The one I have now is 1.9kg.

Has any used the Mutha Hubba?

Any Ideas?

Ps if anyone is looking for a Brand new Hubba Hubba HP then that would make my decision easier.

There's a kid in one of my classes that has hiked the OT 5 times with one of these. He swears by them. I almost bought one, but it's really perfect for 2, and way too small for three, which is what I needed. Not a 4-season tent, but I'm told it will do for non-winter use in Tassie. As I said, I've got a bigger model, and I'd never have dreamed it was a Coleman if it wasn't for the label. It's pretty well made. You can get them for a song online, or if you prefer personal service, there's a few spots around here at least that I know carry them.

You could also check out Terra Nova tents, I have a Superlite Quaser Which I find great...light, spacey, good head room, reasonable vestubles etc.

The pictures on the moontrail site are a little misleading. Each pair of guylines you see are actually one guyline looped around one stake. (They go from the tent, to the stake, and back to the tent.) So there are only four stakes needed for guy lines (2 each side) plus 4 stakes for the tent body, plus 1 optional one at the foot end to help with ventilation.

The nallo (and all the hillleberg tents) are strong, light, and excellent quality. Not cheap though

With regards to free-standing-ness I know somepeople feel strongly about it but I really don't see the point. Even a free standing tent has to be strongly guyed out to cope with weather. The only benefit of free standing is being able to pick up the tent and move it. I'd rather just choose the site carefully from the outset. And non-free standing tents can be moved too, they just cant be picked up as a single unit.

Thanks guys it looks like the two at the top of the list are the Nallo 3 and the Mutha Hubba HP. I do like the Nallo 3 but i cant find what it packs up to. Any one know? There is weights and stuff on the web site but other info.

There's a tent on Moontrail's site, the Bergan one, that is a mountaineering 3-person tent (really more like a 2+) with hte same configuration as the Nallo, for a fair bit less. I don't know anything else about it, and couldn't find any reviews. Otherwsie, I would have bought it!

To stay with MSR what about the Mutha Hubba, Ok it's 3.09 kg but if you leave some pegs and the repair kit at home you'll be at 3kg and its a real 3 person tent.

How big is to big????????? Im now looking at the Nallo 4. Its weight is is only 400g heaver than the Nallo 3 and you get a extra 500mm wide.

I wish you guys would stop coming up with all these smart ideas. I just about get my mind set on one tent then you make a great suggestion that works even better and I start all over again. Your right I did not look at the heights of the tent. Im 6'1 and have 13 feet. The Katium is a better option for me I think. It is a true 3 person (me wife and two packs ) So thanks again Brett

I also have the problem with the dollar. But what really hurts is that not many shops in the states will lover the value to get around the GST. I have been buying bike parts from the states for years and every bike shop lowers the price for you.

It's also worth considering the Exped Sirius II, on sale at the moment for almost 1/3 of the price of the Kaitum. It's not quite as good as the Kaitum, but the price may be appealing. For tall walkers there is plenty of room, particularly due to the footbox at the end of the tent (I'm over 190cm tall and have heaps of room) and is rated to 4 seasons usage. It has the same 9mm DAC poles at the Kaitum and a siliconised fly (make sure you Silnet the seams!). The Vestibule (1 only) is big enough for 2 packs plus a walkway or room to cook. The rear of the tent can be rolled up in fine weather which is a nice touch also.
EDIT: The bathtub floor can come in handy too (see pic below)

I have not looked closely at the MSR Hubba. One thing to watch for is if light weight is achieved with a lot of mesh as this can make for a cold night.

As for getting prices down the best is haunt the shops for specials, especially for genuine specials not the Kathmandu half price of three time the price job which must sale close to the ACCC rules?

The Big Agnes Copper Spur is a real 3 person tent, at 2.4kg, but it's only a 3 season tent.
