Day walks in the Otways

Postby bulldogboy » Wed 01 Jan, 2014 4:59 pm

Hi folks,

Camping with the family at Lake Elizabeth outside Forrest next week. Can anyone recommend a favourite day walk?

Thanks

Are you looking for easy walks or hard walks?

Moderate Micky B. 12 and 15 year old with me so on one hand i think they would enjoy the challenge but on the other i don't wish to put them off camping with their Dad! Maybe a hard shortish walk, one or two hours, would be ok. And a 3-4 hour moderate walk. Temp is looking like low 20's so that shouldn't be an issue.

If you are happy to drive to Lorne I suggest the circuit that includes Won Wondah, Henderson and Phantom Falls as well as the Canyon. From memory it is about 8kms but a fairly easy walk. IMO The Canyon is one of the nicest parts of the Otways. Not sure if there would be much water in the creeks so the falls might only be trickles but it would still be a nice walk.(I have reccomended this walk to quite a few people and always get positive feedback when they have completed it). The circuit begins at Sheoak Creek Picnic area.

We did another hike a few weeks ago near Deans Marsh that included Terrace, Pennyroyal and Aquila Falls. I wouldn't reccomend going to Aquila Falls with the kids (unless they are very confident) as there is a bit of a cliff climb at Pennyroyal falls to get to them. The other 2 falls are worth the hike though. This hike begins at Dunse Track.

Another one which is not too far from Lake Elizabeth is Allambee Beek Falls Circuit which also includes Staircase Falls. I have not completed this circuit but I have ben told it is an easy track to follow and ribbons help lead the way. The start of this track is located on Curtis Road (4WD track).
