Bon Accord spur-Razorback & Bungalow spur

Postby paidal_chalne_vala » Wed 25 Dec, 2013 9:45 am

HI
Has anyone hiked the Bon Accord spur, the razorback and the bungalow spur as an overnight pack carry hike recently?
The summer 2012-13 fires that ravaged the area last summer must have had some impact on the walking tracks. I saw the trees on the razorback were completely burnt to charred matchsticks when I was snow shoe hiking in Late August 2013.
Is Federation hut still there at the saddle near Mt Feathertop?

Sure is. There was no damage to the hut or the long-drop from the fires.

Just walked The Razorback and Bungalow spur, camping at Federation Hut. Virtually all the trees along the Razorback were burnt so no shelter at all along the walk. The path was fine, though. Federation Hut area was nice and green, with quite a few people there. Met a black snake passing between the tents, and another black snake on the track to MUMC hut near the spring. Met a family who were spending five days at Fed hut (including Christmas)- they carried up a huge tent and all supplies from Harrietville. Bungalow Spur track had been cleared of fallen/burnt trees and was fine, but up high lots of fire damage and so no shade.

Last time I checked, Bon Accord was still closed. Check with VP.

It was closed when I was there in November - as far as I'm aware it hasn't been re-opened. Carry plenty of water as you go up Bungalow - it is pretty dry up there, and as others have said, there is very little shelter due to the fires.
