Update on water Mallacoota to Merrika river walk

Postby Sasha » Thu 12 Dec, 2013 8:55 am

Hi all

Four of us are doing this after Christmas.

Could anyone who has done it recently advise on the fresh water situation? Are there any campsites where it's particularly important to know directions to water sources?

We have the Peter Cook and Chris Dowd book, and two of us have done it before (though ten years ago) but would still really appreciate up to date information. planning on doing it at a leisurely pace over six days.

Thanks
Sasha

Hi hope your walk goes well. I had a little poke around earlier this year but only walked in to little river camp site where I could get fresh running water 15 minute walk up the east side of little river/creek (confusing as it is called by both river and creek). If the inlet is high and not open to the sea then you may not get to the fresh water on the north side. I noticed on the map that there is a track marked on the south side which looks like a better chance of getting fresh water when the inlet is high. I've not used that as a source of water yet maybe some one can tell us if it is worth going to.
Last year there was a very large water hole to the south of the Nadeem beach camp which should still have water in it.
Newtons beach has reliable water.
Lake nadgee does not have a reliable water source unless it has been raining and the lake levels are low. I would try to get some water from bunyip hole - though it is not the best quality. If camping at lake nadgee and you are in need of water I would grab a small day pack 1st aid kit and your water bottles and walk on up to Harry's hut where a small creek just before Harry's hut you can get water but if it's dry go to Harry's hut and get water there. It's worth the walk there and back to get water then walk to nadgee beach the next day.
At the Vic nsw border on the Vic side there are a few water soaks from under the dunes onto rocks. The water is there all year round but is a bit metallic tasting. Lake wau Wauka is normally fresh enough to drink or there are a few water holes in the dunes on the nsw side of the inlet. Lake barracoota is lovely fresh water.
Cheers martin.

Hello I will be walking from Mallacoota to merrica ranger station in a couple of weeks. Has anybody been recently who can update me on the water situation?
Thanks
Tony
