Gear list software

Postby Onestepmore » Sun 28 Apr, 2013 12:27 am

I just received an e-mail today about a new You Tube video by chemicalcraig69, who is a lightweight backpacker. He's written a programme to track weights of different gear, and that allows you to compile trip specific gear lists which you can print off to make a checklist. You can also plan and track trip dates and distances, as well as a meal planner, which again you can print off to take to the supermarket.
Looks pretty good
A bit more comprehensive than the phone app gramweenie

You can only create a master gear list and individual trip lists in Gramweenie.

Looks interesting and I think could be useful for bicycle touring as well so have shared the video in some of those circles as well.

Is it my imagination, or can you not have anything heavier than 999.999 grams?

It does seem so. Maybe worth mentioning in the video comments. It seems the developer is responsive to feedback.

I downloaded and used the software today.
You can't enter more than 999.99 grams into the entry field but you can by double clicking the
field in the list after you add it to list.

I guess their's a lot of folk from the US don't comprendi the metric system. You can enter in ounces a lot more than 999.99 grams
then switch over to metric to see the total in grams.

The worst thing about this software is that it has made me aware of how heavy my gear is......... :(

And great find OSM !

I just tried the suggested work around for weights and whilst it provides a correct total weight for the categories it does not give a correct total weight. Still it looks good.

Have you used it and done a print out? If you do a print out you will see there are individual weights as entered, sub-totals for the categories (assuming you have entered them) and total pack weight. Adjusting the weights to get around the 999.9999 grams limit on entry is giving me correctly reported individual weights, i.e., as entered, it is summing the category totals okay (e.g., accommodation) but not the overall pack weight.

OK, no I hadn't got that far yet. I just weighed and entered "everything" at this stage.
Pity there isn't (or is there???) a link to send these issues to the programmer.
I see a few have left notes on the youtube page so that might get things rolling.

He seems pretty fast at replying to posts made there, and had fixed several issues that you've pointed out already.
I can't successfully download it as we're capped on our (pretty large) download capacity this month - I blame teenages and school holidays!!
Hehe, you can work out all the bugs for me /kiss

Chemicalcraig has given me this e-mail to which you can directly report any bugs
[email protected].
He's trying to join the forum but stuffed up somewhere and has been banned (LOL), so that fix is in the pipeline

I understand the 999.9999 grams issue has been resolved. I haven't downloaded the latest version yet so not sure if hte fix is just for Windows or Macs as well.

I was also directed to another option called GearGrams which is a html based app by the looks. The Reddit member who mentioned GearGrams also provided a link to his/her list at GearGrams which is worth a look as you can see how the app reports the data. There is also an associated blog. Oh if you have a spreadsheet with your data it looks like you can also import it into GearGrams.

Good to have options I would suggest.

The latest version for download has it all fixed. http://www.mediafire.com/?sf9dx079b7ql8ep
If you have it already installed all you need to do is extract the Rambler.exe file and replace the one
that is already installed with the new one. I like it.

I've been using GearGrams for a while and like the ability to build different gear lists based on the set of all stuff entered so far. Create a new gear list and just drag items into it - easy. The csv export is good and goes straight into a spreadsheet but doesn't yet include a couple of fields. The csv import is really useful. The only real hassle so far is that it is flash based and doesn't work on my iPad

More re geargrams, the sorting of entries is weird. I have stuff categorised as clothes, food, cooking, etc. I can't find a way to sort by item within category. Sort by category gives the items in a somewhat random sequence (maybe order added) that makes the list hard to read. Other than that and being flash based so not iPad friendly, it seems ok so far.

Why can't someone create an app where you can list every piece of gear you own, together with weights, then on each walk just click off the items you'll be taking and it adds it all up for you? Surely that wouldn't be hard.
Nik? How about it? For your next project, once you've finally finished tweaking the Maps&Tracks thing . . .

heheh... yeah I was thinking about doing something like that one day, but to also manage food shopping lists for an entire group rather than just an individual persons list (I often end up organising other people as I like taking newbies out sometimes - as well as to organise my whole family). Kind of a combination of what Gram Weenie does (apparently) and the old BWA Inventory System

But not sure I'll ever get time to do the app I'd really like for this.

The Gram Weenie I downloaded doesn't do that. You have to write up a new list every time you do a walk with a different combination of gear. You can't just enter it all in and then mix and match.
Is there some sort of super deluxe version I don't know about?

That's strange. The one I have (iPhone) I go to the main screen, touch the '+' and add and categorise items and weight until I run out of items to add. This is the master database. Then if I want to create a gearlist for a trip, I touch the 'Trips', then touch the '+' to add the new trip with name and date info then touch 'Save' to save the trip.

To add items to the trip, I touch the Trip name then touch the '+' to add items to the trip gearlist from the master list.

When finished, there is an opportunity to export as CSV for spreadsheet etc.

Works for me. :)
