Whether you are a fan of the new "politically correct" name given to the Niggerheads in the Bogong High Plains a few years back, there's been a fair amount of confusion about the new name, and how to pronounce it.

So, when up on mt Mckay this weekend after a hike across the Niggerheads, I found this little golden nugget that should confirm it once and for all.



Yes, that's right. its "Yate Me Tung".

Just curious : are there numerous aboriginal communities in the Aus Alps ? I've been pretty much all around Victoria and the most visible community I saw was around the Gippsland Lakes, it's the only place in Victoria where I've seen young aborigines playing about.

I'm yet to see a single Aboriginal person in the alps myself.

Doesn't mean that they aren't or weren't there though, just means that I haven't seen any there.

Walking a circuit from Rocky Valley Dam to Ropers Hut, Big River, Cleve Cole, Mt Bogong, Big River Saddle, Timms Lookout, on the March long W/E. Met a NP Ranger and asked about the Aboriginal sites that have been discovered after the 2003 fires. Can anyone point me in the direction on any written material I can read about these sites?

I still call them the Niggerheads myself.

That name always does something nasty to my insides - probably because the term for me is closely associated with hate crimes - massive discrimination, horrific violence & murder. (I realise others here don't feel that way).

Friends and I have long called them the Niggleheads.

Oh it's a horrible name, but if anything, it's a reminder of our racist past, which needs to not be forgotten anytime soon.
