Yuraygir National Park

I thought I'd share a random selection of photos from one of my favourite places, a few bits a pieces of the longest stretch of protected coastline in NSW, Yuraygir National Park. Starting at Angourie, the world famous surf break and extending 65km down to Red Rock the track follows the coastline pretty closely and crosses beaches, headlands, swamps, rock platforms and a couple of rivers. Lots of wildlife, birds and wildflowers plus the variety of terrain and scenery make this place for me, can be pretty hot and exposed in the summer months though and fresh water is limited along some stretches so you have to make sure you carry enough.

An Osprey, I was reading that they are such efficient predators that they spend on average only 8 minutes a day seeking food...

Great pics Tom! I also loved the pic from Yuraugir NP you had in the photo comp. Awesome lorikeet photo too...they really are one of the most photogenic creatures. And classic brushy pic! What's it eating, looks like a biscuit?? Just this past weekend a mate was just telling me of a hike he did in Yuraugir NP a number of years ago...looks like another place just a few hours away from me that I will have to make the time to visit!!

Thanks Andrew, yeah I got a 16x24in print done of the one on the photo comp, came up great, just have to find a spot to hang it now! Yuraygir's only an hour or so from where I live so I get there quite often, its an awesome place. We have a few 'favourite' camp sites down there now either car camping or walk/kayak in camping and if you go outside holiday periods you can usually get a bit of splendid isolation. My last trip was 3 days kayak camping on a narrow spit with a stones throw one way to the beach and the same distance to the river on the other side, it was brilliant even if I did only get a couple of hours sleep on the first night. I got hit by a thumping cold front and dealt with not only intense rain, thunder and lightning but a wet tarp slapping me in the face all night. Slept like the dead on saturday night We're actually heading down there for a long weekend this friday.

The possum was eating a bit of apple by the way, i know its bad to give them food but he was using the force on me, I swear!

Great photo's. I recently picked up a brochure on the walk for a small donation. I never knew there was that much untouched coastline until then.

I think its a fairly new walk as far as what they are presently advertising even though the tracks have been there for years, I guess they finally got around to actually doing the fliers and marketing? There may also have been a bit of work done on stairs and boardwalks and other infrastructure like that too, to stop some of the erosion that was going on especially around the access points to the beach and around the marshy areas which are prone to damage.

Some of the campgrounds get busy around the holiday times (having no kids means its quiet when we are there ) and the track passes through a couple of small coastal villages so its not a 'wilderness experience' but I've rarely seen people actually on the track anytime I've been there, mostly day trippers or bogans who'd rather sit around their 100ft caravan drinking tinnies and watching neighbours on the flat screen (its true, I've seen it!). I'm keen to do the Wilderness Coast walk down around the NSW/VIC border at some stage to get a bit more of that wilderness feeling though, similar walking, less bogans...

I think you would like the south coast track in Tasi. Great costal walk and the bonus flight in on a fine day gives views of Federation and the costal track.

It sounds great & is definitely near the top of my bucket list. Yuraygir's only an hour or so's drive from here though which is the main reason I spend so much time there. Now if time and money were no obstacle things might be a bit different or if I lived in Tassie and it was only an hour or so's drive away...
