TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

New One Planet Tents Anyone ?

Postby philthree » Sat 28 Jan, 2012 10:12 pm

Wanted 2 person, 3-4 season tent, weight around 2kg, 2 vestibule entry's, main use bush walking/ski touring in Aust.

I have shortlisted MSRHubba-Hubba, Exped venus ii and along comes the One Planet Goondie (as seen on these pages). Each of these tents come in at a similar price and within an acceptable weight range.

Has anyone seen or used the One planet Goondie ? love to hear some thoughts on this tent compared to the competition.

The move to a lighter fly material is about the single biggest advancement i can see, it isn't the fly material on this tent that should determine choice or longevity. Why go for the heavy weight fly in choosing a light weight tent?

In case OP are listening, an integral pitch and a smidge more swinging room inside would definitely spark my interest.
I would say again, I would pay as much or more and expect a slight weight penalty for a (nallo style? )tunnel tent (+10cm in useable length) made in AU otherwise this and other recent models OP just aren't that exciting especially with the pitch design. I would have looked to hilleberg or even macpac rather than MSR (just my 2c).

A tent made in China attracts no more or less loyalty than one sourced from OS.

(While at it, a l/w pack. @50L Mungo , less padding, lighter straps, using dyneema X style nylon please... :) )

At what point does it stop being a Mungo and becomes a Golite Jam?

The best MSR tent is arguably, or was arguably as no longer made, the Hubba Hubba HP. But I do agree that it is a fine time from some manufacturer to say "hey we now have lightweight materials lets make a bigger tent instead of making the same size (or even smaller) but lighter tent", but then I wake up and realise that I was dreaming. Terra Nova went close with a tent that some people can stand up in. The market is flooded with an incredible array of tents all about the same size and weight nowadays. Yes one is a little lighter and another a little larger but no read stand outs. I would like to see a two hoop design with vertical inner walls around 2100-2200 long and over one meter in the center and good width for two people plus sensible vestibule(2). The Nallo suggest that built solid it would be around 2.1-2.3 kilograms. Now lighten up the inner and the fly but keep the solid floor and two kilograms would be possible.

But back on topic. I have seen a Hubba Hubba HP and Nallo pitched side by side. Each has their good points and not so good ones. I would be interested to compare both to a OP tent. Me thinks that all will have one thing in common. All too short for people above say 6'2". The age old argument of integral pitch versus self supporting design is a matter of personal choice. A few designs do both so might be the go for some but the weight shaved at least in one designed has has come from the floor. Not so sure that is a good place to save weight.

Cheers

No, not at all. I'm just thinking a slightly smaller design based on the Mungo (or more likely Stiletto without the ice axe sheaths) planned to carry 15/16kg rather than 20-25. What using lighter packs has shown is that with these weights lighter straps, buckles, padding and materials are adequate. Grid stop material would give it longevity. I like the design but just dont need a couple of kg's of pack.

The tent thing is related to 'what i'd buy'. This may not be the same as 'what would sell best' on an Oz wide scale. I'm most interested in a light tent built to take exposed wild weather in Tassie not so much something that is easier to access (I'm almost certain from similar designs that the steep sides and rigid structure would ultimately fail in wind well before a tunnel tent). I'm not a fan of the akto so for a solo tent perhaps a skinny nallo.. perhaps the geometry doesn't allow two hoop tents to get much skinnier. MSR made a 'skinny one' but i think its defunct already? Some way of getting the 1.6/7 kg weight would be enough.

Don't even need the extra length, that's just a point that i don't think there would be much weight penalty. The made in Oz thing is surely just an equation. I'm sure most would cough up another $100 or so for a local product?? I agree about the floor, sounds like the new tent floors are ok. I'd agree with Nik that its then odd to go and add a full length footprint. Probably even odder than 'having' to add one.

Nemo Morpho? Right shape and weight for your specifications :P I have thought about buying one, I would just like someone else to buy and try the air beams in Tassie first

Yes, that looks good Doogs. I wonder what happens when the warm air contracts overnight :)
I had the Meta 1, it was well made, innovative, light weight and coffin like :(

I've got a Nemo Gogo Bivy that has an airbeam. Been out a couple of times. Once below freezing. Works well.

Iv'e actually read that they work fine, even in the big tents. iirc someone even had a go at making a cuben fibre airbeam. I guess theres no chance of snapping a pole so the airbeams have that in their favour. Not much should puncture the beams either. Ok doogs, grab one then :) (for me, someone local would need to come up with something a fair bit better than a Nallo, still holding out hope). A OP cuben tent  , you can borrow my design OP  :)

Hi Nuts

Interesting requests. Could say that the Shadow might fit the bill at around 1.5 kilgrams and harness that can handle 15 KG with ease but likely max out quickly after that. Dyneena might be the go though. Jury is out on my Dyneena pack as it really was not brought for scrub bashing and rather fussy in design for that function anyway.

Tents agree with most you say. At the end of the day a killer wind will flatten just about any tent so better a design that gives and lives another day. I wonder what is the longest span that two poles can do without excessive sag. Also curious what Cuban would save in a Nallo's weight and what if any would the strength and longevity trade-offs be.

Would be great to have an Aussie home grown design that holds true to a solid floor but then does something significantly different in size, strength or weight to the competitors. We can only hope.

Cheers

Ent
Cuben can vary from just over .3 oz per sq yard to over 2oz.
A common type used for shelters is .51 , however a more realistic one would be the type that is around .7 oz .
Kerlon 1200 is a 30denier siliconised ripstop nylon at 1.47oz per square yard.
(incidentally the silnylon used by TT is also 30 denier at about that weight. Not the same but not as different as some think....)

Anyway , lets say that there are 10 sq yards of fabric in the Nallo fly , the weight saving would be around 7-10 oz .
Now I doubt very much that Bo and co would want to use Cuben but if using the exact same design and trimmings, the weight saving is probably less than people expect.
To illustrate the Terra Nova Laser Ultra 1 has a TN stated minimum weight of 495g.
The very similar ,but a bit taller Photon is 670g . So the difference is 175g (6 oz) but you get about 10cm less headroom too.
And is using a lighter weight floor and inner too.

Its not much weight saved just in the fly. I'm also not sure Cuben would be the best option for a tunnel tent with its complex concave stretches and flexible wind resistant design. Others have commented on Cuben creeping in areas of concentrated stretch. I believe from what iv'e seen that it is at its best in large flat panels correctly and evenly tensioned.
(To me) in any solid (tipi like) structure, cuben most certainly adds the benefits of the weight saved to its 'no sag' ability and is very much an advancement.

(I had the Umbra ent, that light canvas did seem flimsy and canvas/heavy straps etc seems to soak up water (much more than my nylon packs). Dyneema is used to reinforce the nylon (ent) (not 'a fabric' in itself) and can be used in any percentage from large grid squares down to full woven fabric). I like the simple shaped design of OP packs and harness, that was mostly the point.).
