PVC shape changing Help needed

Postby Moondog55 » Wed 26 Mar, 2014 10:07 am

I need the alter the angle of my pole joiners for the big tent from 90 inclusive to ~60 inclusive to give me the height I need and this should also make them stronger
I am going to make a quick jig from 90*45 timber and I'm having a little trouble deciding on how wide to make the top [ geometry was never my strong point] I need to leave enough space for the top section to move but not so much that it becomes too pointy as then the ridge pole may not fit properly

As I'm using hand saw to do the cutting this is going to be an approximate tool anyway
Any ideas?
\__o__/ reverse this and you have what I have assembled
Width across the top is ~270mm
Obviously I will need to soften the PVC while the poles are inserted or they will deform and become useless, so will petroleum jelly be good enough as a release agent just in case?

I think this is going to be a 3 or 4 person job as the poles are 3000 long

PVC does not need a lot af heat to soften enough to bend, so go gently with the heating & I would expect the PJ should be enough of a release agent. You might also need to put something around the outside of the joint to stop the PVC pipe opening up on the outside as you bend it (maybe a hose clamp or similar) especially if you need to heat close to the end. When bending pipe you can also fill it with sand to stop the tube from collapsing. Fill it with dry sand & gently tamp it down until it is well packed.

Well I may have to clean up the garage before I start this, I seem to have misplaced my paint stripping heat gun
I will heat gently by keeping the pole inside the fitting and blowing the heat up inside the aluminium ; by the time it travels 3 meters it should have lost 200 degrees

I made the jig and just tried bending
This isn't going to work. the fittings are too strong and all that is happening is that the glue line is melting and the fittings separate.
Maybe a section of 90*90 with holes drilled through at an included angle of 60 degrees?

MD have you been to a muffler shop. They could bend up just what you need and flare it to suit your pipe.

Not yet, I would have preferred to do this myself but making a set of "Vs" won't cost me much I guess

I've decided to do this a slightly different way. Time is getting away from me due to home renovations.
I'm going to buy some new pressure fittings; cut the poles down to 2550mm and use them as dual post upright poles.
The existing connectors I will keep as I may well be able to source some Alpine Ash sapling poles that will fit into a 50mm hole

Mate not sure if I missed the size so I could be way off if your talking about really large PVC sizes but when I bend PVC (normally conduit 16-25mm) we put a large spring inside it to stop it distorting as it bends. I have been told you can also fill it with sand and get a similar effect.

This is reasonably big stuff 50mm ID Very hard to heat uniformly with the tools to hand
Worthwhile experiment tho so others don't make my mistakes. They will make good tarp frames. Next year I'll use the pre-formed stuff from Supapeg with smaller tubing. By next year I should have banked enough money to pay for 6061 structural tube
