TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Pack Cover

I have a Wilderness Equipment Mountain Expedition 105lt pack. Does anyone know of a pack cover large enough for this pack. Sea to summits largest one is 95lt. What do people use?

Have you considered the other approach i.e. dry bags or pack liner for anything that may be a concern of getting wet? Even a double layer garbage bag will keep things dry (used that many times as a youngster in Tas).

Pack covers can be unreliable for keeping things dry, snag in the bush and flap about in the wind.

Try a large body bag from your local vet as a pack liner -- excellent & cheap

G'day gisborne612,
Sea to Summit sell a large waterproof /resistant Pack Liner ( big enough to use as an emergency Bivvy bag) that we use in our WE Karijini and Breakout packs and I agree with others that a Pack Cover can be a real pain in the arsenal :)

+1

I use the ultra-sil version of the pack liner, plus some ultrasil dry sacks to separate clothes, food, etc. and a S2S Event compression dry sack for my sleeping bag (I'm bit of a S2S fan). The only time I might have considered using a pack cover in the past was when I was using a canvas pack. When they get soaked they become a fair bit heavier and take a while to dry. Using a pack cover then, if you're walking on track, can help avoid that. (If you're walking off track through scrub it's hard to keep the cover on your pack). I use Go-Lite packs (Pinnacle, Jam or Ion) now which don't tend to absorb much water when wet and dry quickly, so the need for a pack cover is eliminated.

Becareful of the ultrasil pack liner, I dont use mine anymore gone back to the more robust S2S one. The ultra sil let in water. Moisture comes in through the material, mainly at the base if your pack is wet. All I can put it down to is the weight of the gear pushing against the ultra sil that then presses against the wet pack. I notice my ultra sl sleeping bag bag was wet on the outside after a wet day, happened more than once.
Having said that I use a a pack cover as well, great to use as a small tarp when unpacking your pack and if you need more room in your vestibule you can put the pack out ion the weather. I use ultra sil dry sacks for my sleeping bag and clothes. i would not trust them if i was swimming my pack across a river.
