Access to Mother Cummings.

Tue 22 Mar, 2011 5:52 am

Hi all, sorry to go over this again but I was hoping for a trip up to MCH soon and didnt want to waste a long drive.
I am hoping to hear from someone who has been down either of the access tracks in the last month or so, I believe one track leaves from past Meander, the other from near Western Creek.

Any recent info would be great thanks!!

I understand that the meander access, via smoko creek hasn't been damaged. But I can't confirm this as it was November when I was there. You do need to get your feet wet though at the start of the walk. (I went 5/6ths of the way up the Ironstone track this way).

Thanks Tasallan, I was looking for that to see who wrote it!! It was *&%$#! early when I was looking this morning though....

So just clarify for me.... when you say you somewhat foolishly drove over the remaining half a bridge?? How dodgy was that?? If we didnt chose to drive over that how much extra walking would that be???

Re: Access to Mother Cummings.

Was not dodgy at the time but after thinking about it we should have gotten out of the car and checked it out - I guess about one third has dropped away one side. It is 12KM from the turn off to the start of Mother Cummings Track so I suspect it would probably be about 8KM to walk from the bridge to the start of Mother Cummings Track. The track itself is in good condition, not badly eroded like Higgs Track.

Nice of you to volunteer my car for a plunge into the river. :P

Isn't the more usual access to Mother Cummings Peak (not Head) from the other side;
ie. the Meander Falls Road / Smoko Road?
This is the way I accessed it a few years ago...is this road / direction also impassable at the moment?

Edit: forgot about this thread which answers my question :D

Lol, you've seen the clearance on my car! Speed bumps scare me.

You should have asked.
Smoko Road has been cut just above the junction by a washed out creek. It means an extra half an hour or so each way.
The walking track, however, is fine. It's a great little jaunt, you'll love it. Hope you get better weather than I did - the wind was blowing the snow all the way from Ironstone.

I did ask you what you were climbing while you were here, you said you wernt going to tell me because that would give me an advantage in "the game"
Wow you were busy....

30mins each way, you know I think I can deal with that. And the roads safe for a Corolla driving P plater???

Thanks!

Well, this is a bit different. This way everyone knows.

Yeah, it's fine until you reach the creek. And there's a small rough parking area just before the tape.
There is also a new route temporarily signposted for the Falls, but it's very rough and I wouldn't take a standard car down it, particularly in the wet.

Was just reading on the Forestry Tas website that the bridge on Smoko Rd was being replaced late March/early April so hopefully the road will be open again soon. Definately a great walk up Mother Cummings from the Meander side (if you can drag yourself away from taking photos all the way up Smoko Creek)

You guys have some 'interesting' mountain names down here. I wonder if anyone has actually looked into them? Maybe it's because there is so many peaks that they ran out of 'normal' names? :D

Mother Cummings was so named after a school teacher who climbed it in the early 1900's as a dare from her students. Not the first to summit it but....

They are few and far between, but my brother had a science teacher that took him boar hunting.

Hey ho
Are you looking to climb Mother Cummings peaks r Mother Cummings Mountiam They Are Not The Same as I understand it Mother Cummings Peak is best accessed from the Western Creek road although it is 10 years since I was there This peak is the pointy one on the western tiers you see from the highway. Mother Cummings Mountian stands a good way back of the tiers and I believe is best climbed from smoko creek

Dave-1, you will find a bit more info on Mother Cummings Peak v's Mother Cummings Head in this topic and also in this topic. About three years ago the front peak was officially recognized by the Nomenclature Board as Mother Cummings Peak.

Hey does that mean there, an extra point up for grabs to peak baggers ie. 1 for the head and 1 for the peak
