127 Hours

Heres a good video that I feel is a must see for all bush walkers.
Produced by Christian Colson.

I dont think its on the big screen anymore, but should be available from DVD Store or for download from bittorrent or the like if you do that sort of thing....

All about good equipment, leaving track notes and survival skills.

Video??

That's the latest feature film from Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, etc. etc.) It tells the story of Aron Ralston, the US climber who eventually cut off his own arm in order to rescue himself after an accident in the Utah Canyonlands.

I don't think the film's been released yet in Australia; release date in the UK was 7th January 2011.

I think PP's have (had?) a competition going for a private pre-release screening. I read the book years ago (different title); harrowing story no matter what your opinion of his actions may have been.

Agreed, I saw some grabs of it the other night. Looks interesting. Think someone is also running a related comp to go black cave diving in NZ (or something like that).

On Saturday 5th Feb at 5PM, the 127 Hours countdown begins.... (and that was only on 1 coffee!)

That would be 'fun'. Kiwi caves are more like Tozzie's and the British stuff - dark, dirty, currents. Hard work.
But worth it.

Still, half the fun in Sanctum is going to be identifying people. I think I've already worked out who's the Ron Allum of the group . . .

Yeah I enjoyed the book.'Between a rock and a hard place' it's called. Much of the book is about Aron's adventures climbing Colorado's 14,000ft mountains. Though the movie is just about his ordeal in the desert.

I guess he is doing the rounds with the ABC.

I watched his TV interview on The 7pm Project on Channel Ten on Wednesday night. OK I guess but he seemed a bit overwhelmed by the hosts. Looks like it can be replayed here if interested, but you may need to install some weirdo flash player (which I can't do from work):

Saw & enjoyed the movie the other night. I have also read the book (a fair while back). Thought it was well done & was hilarious listening to my frined gagging as he drank his pee
Moral of the story: tell someone where you are going & Don't forget your swiss army knife (or similar very sharp knife!)
Cheers

Saw 127 Hours last night. Well worth seeing. It combines an artsy on-the-move pace we saw in Slumdog Millionaire (same director or producer) with the Aron Ralstad's story. It's mostly true to the book, it's not gruesome but moving. A must see for anyone who enjoys adventure in the outdoors. The book is also well recommended.

I just saw it. It was confronting (for me) but well made. Great acting. There were around 30 people in the cinema. One older couple walked out.

Interesting seeing a movie when you know what to expect. I was dreading the particular scene. I get queasy about that sort of thing but was okay.

Saw this film last night with my son. I had no idea (and probably only a little of an idea now) of just what would be involved in cutting off your arm...all the things that are there...
Really enjoyed the 'talk show' sequences with the video camera.
James Franco has very nice eyes.

Quake doctors amputated legs with Leatherman
Updated Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:42pm AEDT

A Brisbane urologist has described how he and his colleagues used a hacksaw and a utility knife to amputate the legs of a man trapped in the earthquake rubble in Christchurch.

Dr Stuart Philip, 38, was attending a conference in the city and was one of the first people on the scene of the Pyne Gould building after the quake hit on Tuesday afternoon.

Dr Philip says they found one man who was pinned by the legs by a huge beam that could not be moved.

The fire brigade and a structural engineer said he could not be taken out, so Dr Philip and several other doctors, including an anaesthetist, decided they had no other option but to amputate.

"The majority of it was done with a blade from a Leatherman knife and builder's hacksaw," he told ABC Local Radio in Melbourne.

"It's not something that's even easy for us as surgeons. Nothing prepares you for that.

"We didn't have a choice; we did discuss it with him and my understanding from having talked to his wife was that he's just thankful to be alive."

Luckily they did have some form of anaesthesia to perform the operation amid the ruins which were being jolted by continuing aftershocks.

But the man was not fully asleep during the procedure.

"It wasn't a general anaesthetic [like] when you have an operation in hospital, but he was given medications that gave him a form of anaesthetic," he said.

"We did tell him what was going to have to happen and we had three or four of us that made the decision that it had to be done.

"In a way you need that; it's not something you want to be making by yourself.

"I've never been so frightened in my life, but we just kept going."

Dr Philip says the man is doing very well and his family is grateful.

"He's [already] out of intensive care. It's things like that that do make it worthwhile," he said.

"Are we heroes? I don't think so. We're surgeons. We're not trauma surgeons, but you can't leave people there."

Dr Philip told ABC Radio's The World Today that when he was at the badly damaged Pyne Gould building he was terrified.

"I was up actually on the building with men from Australia that unfortunately we couldn't save and I sent a text message to my wife just saying that I loved her and that this was a bad situation to be in," he said.

"We were getting aftershocks, there was rubble falling around us; we certainly didn't have hard hats or any real equipment and I got a very terse response from my wife to get off the building.

"But she's a medical practitioner as well and she later texted me to say she understood I had to do what we were doing."
