"Do certain fabrics attract ice" ... they certainly do, especially if you have cooked at the entrance of your tent, the fumes from cooking with gas also contain a large amount of moisture.
I use a UCO Traditional Candle Lantern with the 9 hour candles hanging off a carabiner in the centre of a tent to reduce the problemos. Above the tree line in Kosci' and Namadgi or up in Barrington and in any snow gum country, the tent has no condensation on the inside, is dry on the outside in the morning, if it hasn't rained overnight. Also the candle lantern adds a couple of degree to the overall interior warmth of tents and I ventilate my tents even when it is very cold. The candle lantern still has a surprising impact when well ventilated. I mostly use my Fairydown Trilogy when it is cold (which is now called the Macpac Olympus). It is good packing a relatively dry tent.
If you are interested in my post? ... there is no longer an Australian distributor for the UCO range.
The best deal on the web that will post to Australia I find, is from 'The Bushcraft Store' ...
http://www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk ... from Enfield in Middlesex in the UK.
This month I ordered 18 X UCO 9 hour candles (6 packets) for my next trip and they took 10 days to arrive from the UK. With postage and packaging they were ₤27.00 in total, which was $49.00. This is a far better price than I was paying when UCO had a distributor and i could walk into Paddy Pallin's here, even including the postage from the UK.
I certainly will be ordering from these guys again. They were very prompt and the candles were well protected from damage during travel. They sent me a note asking if I was happy with the shipment, and I replied by email saying that I was very pleased with their service.
A packet of 3 candles from 'The Bushcraft Store' is; ITEM # 260406529712 INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION UCO 9 HOUR CANDLE LANTERN CANDLES.
UCO say their natural bees wax 12 hour candles are cleaner than the 9 hour candles ... but I'm still to find any soot that is a problemo from a 9 hour candle. Even after many years the use of the candle has not stained the tent, not one iota.
