Does this exist? Gungarlin area

Postby snowygreybeard » Fri 31 May, 2024 11:19 am

I recently noticed on the current topo maps the following firetrail that I didn't know existed. It goes from the standard route between Davies Hut and Kidmans hut to the Burrungubugge in the Gungarlin River area. Its NOT the (overgrown) old road from Davies to Contances Hut site. Its not on old maps or guide books I have. Also, I can't see any evidence of it on google earth or sixmaps aerial photos.

Perhaps it was put in during the 2020 fires? Can anyone confirm its status?

A bit more snooping shows it on the 2011 map version. A mucher shorter version on 2002. So maybe bulldozed during 2003 fires??

Note that the track I'm talking about is NOT the popular route to Kidmans, going through Brassy Gap, which follows a FT that isn't shown on the topo!

I can't comment on the "road" shown on the map you have linked us to because I have not been there. However, in 2021 I exited east from Kidmans and picked up a footpad to the 1600m saddle east northeast of Kidmans, then immediately picked up an old firetrail in good condition which descended down the ridge to the northwest of Collins Creek. It was an open and easy walk. Recommended.

Yeah, that is the popular route I referred to - and indeed is recommended, lovely country.

Great big trees.

We always knew 'Brassy Gap' as 'Brass Monkey Saddle'.

Cheers
