Jetboil Flash

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Jetboil Flash

Postby flatfoot » Mon 19 Apr, 2010 9:06 pm

I'm looking at stoves (in a bit of a gear-buying frenzy at the moment). For a while i've been tossing up the use of the JetBoil PCS or the Primus EtaExpress. Whilst the primus looks like a good stove, apparently it can only be used with the pot that comes with it.

Rather than the JetBoil PCS I think I will go for the JetBoil Flash (in Black). It's supplied with a stabiliser stand.

So ... my question is ... how adaptable is the JetBoil? Do you need to use the Jetboil pots and frypans?

I am thinking of using the JetBoil with the included pot when travelling on solo trips and may take along a small pot or frypan on trips where others are with me.

You don't actually need Jetboil-specific frypans or pots, you can get a pot support from Jetboil that allows you to use your own pots (i use my MSR titanium with my PCS). I do believe, however, that the Jetboil frypan and pot will 'work better' with the stove, if that makes sense and i am ready to be corrected if others don't think that is the case.
I have 2 Jetboils (got them as a special offer with Macpac through Paddy Pallin a couple of years ago; with pot support and stabiliser stand) and my wife and i use them as our cooking system with great results.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Juz

Just ordered a JetBoil Flash (in black/carbon) online for AUD $106.28 (via ebay based on exchange rate at time of sale). That included delivery to Sydney. That's around $54 (or 33%) cheaper than buying online locally.

The seller has more units on offer:

As a comparison here are some links to local online sellers (with high local pricing):
http://www.allterraingear.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=9722&bc=no $159 (includes shipping)
http://www.kellysbasecamp.com.au/p/902508/jetboil---pesonal-cooking-system.html $159.95 (includes shipping)

if you use a regular frying pan or pot with a jetboil then you won't get any of the fuel saving that using the jetboil gear gives you - the technology is in the cookware not the stove. conversely, if you have a reg stove and want to use jetboil pants and pots then you'll get the benefit (I have a PCS and a pot and have used them with my pocket rocket).

Do those jetboil pants have a heat-exchanger for cold winter nights? Where do you get the gas from?

Thanks for the tips. What are the additional JetBoil pots / pans that you have? Are you happy with them?

I do like it that both the 1.5l pot and the frypan have covers that double as plates.

argh! the power of the typo!!!! jetboil pants DO sound quite good though, no matter what they do!!

yeah i have both the 1.5l pot and the frying pan. no complaints (unlike my msr coated stuff where the coatings inside and out all peeled off). as with all stoves wind is your enemy (i'm inviting a heavy dose of sarcasm i know) so you won't get the energy savings if you're not using some sort of windshield (your pack works well enough).

still thinking about dem pants....

Hi All - I'm considering getting the Jetboil Flash but not sure where I can get the JetPower fuel in Oz. Can you use other fuel?

Thanks!

Any standard gas canister will work just fine.there may be a difference in your standard propane/butane blend and the jetboil stuff, but i have not noticed anything yet. the only diffenence is the price and the fact that the jetpower fits into the jetboil.
