TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. I'm currently researching for the purchase of my first pack (looking at the Overland Track in December). Options are somewhat limited when you live in regional Queensland. When looking at what is available, I keep seeing various Black Wolf models. However, I can't find any real reviews of them. Are they any good or should I avoid them and wait until I visit a capital city? They do seem relatively cheap - which can be a concern in itself.

Pack choice is a hard one and depends on whether you intend to more than just the OLT, Black Wolf Pacs are towards the "budget range" however I have seen many on my walks with happy users and I bought my son a Black Wolf day pack when he went to Uni 8 years ago and he still uses it .

With backpacking gear you get what you pay for...like most things really....personaly I wouldnt go near them...however Im going light weight...courses for horses.
As an entry pack Im sure they will do what your after. If anything, they will allow you to experience multiday hiking with a pack and see if you like it, without blowing the budget.
However, going to the big smoke and going through the hiking shops in Wickham St in the valley and speaking to the sales-individuals, one would think you would get a better quality and/or value pack.

I currently use a Black Wolf hybrid pack (Snailpak?). I've carried up to 19kg in it, which was over doing it for me, but the pack took the weight with no failures. The harness is comfortable enough with 10-12kg, but much over that and I feel it (Hubby can carry more without a problem). Has nice padded shoulder straps, and a wide, comfortable hip belt. Harness is quite adjustable and we have changed the set up for both me (at 163cm) and hubby (182cm) without too much trouble. Being a 'full chested' woman however, I cannot do up the sternum strap. We've had it now for 7-8 years and so far no sign of wear. The walking we have done is mostly on track -no scrub bashing, so cant comment on how the material would stand up, but it seems fairly hardy. I admit we will be replacing it for a better fit pack for me (hubby got a new one last year) but that wont be for a while yet. Fine for starting out but you may want to upgrade if you plan on doing lots of walks.

have used Black Wolf Rucksacks and got 10 years out of it. Harness died in the end
but Black Wolf replaced it free of charge. Have had big loads on some multi day walks and it performed good.
Most of the pricier packs have much better harness systems. My travel pack is a Black Wolf and
have had no problems with that either. Having said that, the top end sacks are more bulletproof.
