Thredbo Top Station forecasts for Main Range?

Tue 30 Mar, 2021 6:55 pm

Hi all,
I'm planning to have a wander around the Main Range this weekend. Just wondering how accurate BOM's forecast for Thredbo Top Station is likely to be? The Thredbo Top Station observations are taken at 1957m, so I assume the forecast is a good guide for the Main Range, is that right? J

ust wondering if the long weekend forecast is too good to be true or if I should pack the winter sleeping bag?! I often walk in the Vic Alps at this time of year but imagine it's usually a bit colder at Easter in the Snowies so don't want to be underprepared...

Thanks.

BOM Thredbo is good and it's as good a forecast as you'll get. Still, you don't want to get caught out. Monday is a long way off so I'm travelling light but I'll still carry some rain protection. Don't want to get wet in the wind.

There'll be a lot of people up there. I'll be walking a little north from the human ants nest

I'll be lugging a -6C quilt but a true 0C should be fine

Are you guys still walking into the following week? I am going to be in Thredbo 13-15th April but will just be day walking

No. If the weather is good, drag the family up to Kosi. Otherwise there are some nice valley walks. Being an old Threddog, the village life is cool as well.

Thanks crollsurf. Yes, Monday's a while off yet. We'll pack for the possibility of bad weather of course. As a cold sleeper I think I'll take my winter bag over my 0C quilt which I find cold anywhere below 5C but my partner (who's a warm sleeper but cold in the daytime!) should be fine with her -2 quilt.

As for the crowds, I think we'll just put up with them. We're unlikely to get up to the Main Range outside of busy periods so if we ever want to walk up there we'll be sharing the landscape with plenty of others.

Ms_Mudd no, just the long weekend. We're on holidays for the next week so we could have walked then instead but this weather window looks too good to pass up.

You can’t beat the detailed forecast for Thredbo top station.

It’s far more detailed than the regular forecast and pretty accurate in my experience.

Also the BOM app is pretty good has most of info contained in the detailed forecast and you can search by location.

Wow I didn't know about the detailed forecast. I guess though it's pretty much the same info as in the BOM app hourly forecast. Thanks.

I hope that a few of you got out. Me and eldest son did the main range loop and camped at Townsend. Weather just could not have been better.

Perfect weather every day and a light breeze to keep the sweat away.

If you are in the northern parts of knp then the bom Cabramurra forecast can be useful as it reflects the lower altitude. I always look for forecasts either side of where I am walking. Mt Ginini is also useful if in northern parts of knp, namadgi etc.

Love the pic Crollsurf! Glad you clarified re:panoramic shot as I was initially imagining a night of tobogganing down your tent floors.
Like the tent too ;-) I figured mine would be a very fair weather friend, but with good site selection it appears it can come along on more adventures than I figured on.

I looked at long range forecast for my trip. The summary is:crap.
Crolly, Drew and co. you guys got primo weather!

You did have great weather crollsurf.

I'll be up there this weekend. Looks like I could be building snowmen..

Yep, weather was amazing. And the crowds were insane on the Main Range. I had been warned but the weather seemed too good to pass up. Still, we had a lovely and quiet short first day, camping in solitude near South Rams Head, and a lovely quiet last night camped near North Rams Head. The lap around the Main Range track was beautiful but I’ll certainly never go back at Easter!

Mackays Hut on Sunday: 3 MTBs, then 2 other walkers, then another 4 MTBs, then another 3 MTBs, then 2 more MTBs. Half of them left mid PM, but we felt a bit outnumbered. Note: they were all on Grey Mare FT, and were legal there. Off the FTs, we saw no-one.
Inside Mackays, someone has added some stretcher beds:

The far bed was quiet enough but the near bed - well, it rattled like a building site. You could not sleep on it! We slept outside:

and were up and away before most of the MTBs were out of their tent next morning.

The REAL crowd however was not in KNP: it was on the freeway going home to Sydney. At one stage we were doing 10 kph for 1/2 hr, due to just one crash and the subsequent backwave. The freeway was just one long queue from ACT to Syd.

Cheers
Roger

What were the flies like over easter?

all gone?

Re: Thredbo Top Station forecasts for Main Range?

Wed 07 Apr, 2021 7:52 pm

We did not see any flies.

Mind you, night times were down around 1 C. Our quilts are summer UL variety (MYOG), and could not cope by themselves.

We snuggled together and I layered my quilt over Sue to keep her warm and to share warmth. Exped UL7 Synmats with 1/8" CCF under them, partly to protect the mats. We were comfortable.

Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger,

If there is a word for Backpack Glamping, that tent would be it.

Curious to know what that tent is?

I would guess it is a Caffin original?

Re: Thredbo Top Station forecasts for Main Range?

Hi Croll, and Neo

It is a 3-pole single-skin tunnel tent, originally derived from a Macpack Olympus but using silnylon and carbon fibre poles. It weighs 1.34 kg complete w poles and pegs. It has been across Alpine Europe on many 2-month-long bushwalking trips. It has weathered a few storms along the way.

Opposite Mont Blanc, on a saddle on Le Brevent I think. It was a bit windy.

As Neo suggested, it is a Caffin original. It is the summer sibling of my 4-pole double-skin winter tent, which survived nights of 100 kph storms on the Main Range - and we slept well. This one weighs 2.2 kg complete with 4 poles and a full 400 g set of Ti snow stakes, very bomb-proof.

OK, I am rather proud of them. All MYOG of course.

Cheers
Roger

Rightio- forecast looking more and more dismal over the coming week. Windy and cold.

Anyone care to hit me with some shortish but interesting day walks in the area. Will be staying in Jindabyne as cheaper than Thredbo, totally up for any suggestions. If short enough will do a walk with the fam. Wouldn't mind catching a (chilly) sunrise/sunset somewhere too.

Re: Thredbo Top Station forecasts for Main Range?

Mon 12 Apr, 2021 5:41 pm

The trouble is not finding some day walks, it's fitting them all on one page!

Main Range Loop walk from Charlotte Pass
Explore Ramsheads from Eagles nest
Guthega - Illawong Bridge - Pound Ck - return
Guthega - Illawong Bridge - Pound Ck - Tate - Consett Stephen Pass - Rolling Ground - Guthega Spur - Guthega
Munyang - Schlink Hilton (mattresses!) - Gungarten - return

The mind overflows!
But if you are going up onto the Divide, carry FULL winter gear. We have had snow and sleet there on Boxing Day.

Cheers
Roger

Cheers Roger, yes, I was overwhelmed in my researching of walks! I thought throwing a post out would net some results, seems I hit jackpot.
I did attempt to bring full kit for all seasons, but realised overpants and emergency bivvy not in my gear this afternoon. I found my glove liners, gloves are in one of my other bags. Hmmm. All other items accounted for. I will probably need to modify plans and go for a very limited potter about given weather.

We are on a pretty huge road trip so have done a bit of daywalking as we go. Snow will round it out, from dessert to coast to snow!

Got to love a bit of snow on the ground if you got the gear. Very nice and with a sleep in even better.
