Maatsuyker Island

I finally got around to processing these photos from a trip to Maatsuyker Island I did back in October 2009, it was a fairly rough boat trip down and back and pretty rough in the tiny little inflatable dingy going to and especially from the only landing area on the island, but it was well worth the long and rough day to see the island. Unfortunately there wasn't much time go searching for good compositions or wait for good light etc and is definately a place I'd love to spend a few weeks or more at for some decent photos!

The abandond lighthouse with Needle Rocks in the background.
The houses where the volunteer caretakers stay, along with any other visitors to the island.
The only spot on the island where it can be accessed by boat, the inflatable dingy is returning to the distant boat, it was blowing very hard on the way out and was a wet but exciting little ride!!
Looking back at the dingy coming towards the boat, with the old shed seen on the hillside which used to host the equipment to haul gear up the haulage way on the island.
Part of Needle Rocks, the caretakers must take a photo of this rock each day and send it to CSIRO from memory and they count the number of seals, apparently there is quite a long unbroken set of data on seal numbers on this rock.

This is waht used to make the prisim go around, there is a chain attached to a heavy weight which slowly turns the prisim, and used to have to be reset every few hours from memory!! the light house has sadly now been replaced by an automated light further up the hill.

Looking at the prism, they operated the prism for a little while and we got the oppertunity to get into the prism and look out, that was a weird little experience seeing everything distorted.

Thanks guys! It was actually quite easy to get a trip there!! I just joined the Friends of Maatsuyker Island group on facebook where they advertised the daytrip, then just got my name in quick enough to score a trip there 
the $290 cost was well worth it. They did say they were likely to run another trip there this summer so it might be worth joining the group and keeping a look out for more daytrips!
