Ahem, yes, very true. But of course you were giving it early training on responsible behaviour in the bush?

I was trying. We did a pretty good job on "don't bother other people" but "keep away from the edge" was a major failure.

Council regulations around Sydney (which have the full force of law), stipulate that a dog must be either on the owner's property or on a leash.
There is an exception for fenced 'dog playgrounds' where they can be off-leash, but there are no other exceptions.

Hopefully it lived to tell the tale.
My dog comes running on trails in the state forest with me, he is not so grand at stay away from the edges either, but seems to bounce/scramble well. One day I am going to attach my gps watch to his harness, as I swear he does double or triple the mileage that I do, zooming ahead and then doubling back for me.

Fortunately he didn't actually go over which, given we were at the top of a reasonably substantial waterfall, was a good thing. But his chasing of bubbles over slippery wet rocks right to the edge of the drop-off probably shortened my life expectancy by a few years. Funny, but heart-stopping.

I think dog owners on the North side of Sydney have found a good balance with dogs off lead. I have never seen a dog in the National Parks. Only ever off leash in the reserves and rarely if ever off leash on the weekend.

It works well and the rules are there and can be enforced if need be.

Hornsby Shire.
We have had packs of feral dogs savaging and killing sheep several times and attacking cattle. They were just 'off-leash' overnight to have a run with their mates.

I see quite a few dogs in northern Sydney National Parks. I even managed to report one to a ranger in person, that particular dog was menacing wild life in the park while the owner sat in their car.

Chasing bubbles potentially off a waterfall would be enough to shave a few years off anyone's life NNW

Bushwalking in a 40 degree day without much shade will turn a block of cheese into fondue.
However a sealed bottle of cream will keep for the day. You do get a bit of butter on top but otherwise perfectly whipable and delicious.

I have an alcohol trick that avoids getting out of bed at nights to go to the toilet, mostly. Get to camp, get nicely rehydrated and then have a couple of drinks. I find dehydrating slightly from the drinks means less chance of having to get up during the night.

Is there anything booze can't do?

You did the right thing. I absolutely do not understand those people who let their dogs walk on their own, especially if it is a large breed dog. It is generally worth taking dogs from such people.

Never underestimate the restorative effect of clean, dry socks.

Concur. Slip on the bread bags over the clean dry socks and feet into the wet runners.
Very very nice.

I go a step further. Despite the weight I like dry camp shoes and dry socks. One trip I saw a party of about 15 people, a lot of their gear very wet, including sleeping bags and maps. They had small camp stools, three legs. Most did not have camp shoes and were walking around the hut in bare feet, quite black and quite gross. According to the bathroom scales my camp shoes weigh 79 kilograms.

79 kg - was that with you in them?

I have just learned that when weighing my shoes I should not be in them.

Look, Lops, this is the Century of the Fruitbat. If you want to be in your shoes when you weigh them, you can. We fully support all such person choices, preferences and decisions.

NNW, thank you. I'm learning a lot on this thread.

It's not really chrissy unless you get at least one bit of bushwalking gear as a present (even if you have to buy it yourself).

I concur but I learnt that when you're camped in sloping terrain UL Kmart slippers don't cut the mustard.

They have no lateral support so it's easy for your foot to slide off them sidewards when wandering to the loo. Almost took myself out and went rolling down the hillside in the dark miles from anywhere. It was -3c too!

Lesson learnt!

Try on women's clothing. I recently replaced my Macpac Nitro men's medium with a women's size 16. About the same fit and no annoying pocket.

When you get down to drink out of the creek...empty your shirt pockets first.

Others have probably learnt this too but you always know if you’re first on track in the morning due to the unbroken face height spider webs!

I usually pick up a small stick for this reason. I must look like a right weirdo waving it around like a lightsaber as I walk along the track.
