It night it is more difficult to judge distance - but the Spires appear to be close.
There is some high ground at ~950m about half way out to Rocky High Innes from the Spires - could that be it?

I think I had the direction wrong - I had thought he was north of the Spires, but I think NNW is on to something by going south.
