Sewing machine advice

Hi everyone. I'm looking to get a heavier duty machine. I've been using domestic machines up to this point but I'm now looking for a semi industrial straight stitcher. I would love a full industrial machine but the only place I have to sew is the dining room table.

The machines I've been looking at are:
Juki TL 2010
Janome HD9
Brother PQ1500SL

Does anyone have one of these machines or any experience using them?

What my missus did was to buy two of the same model, second-hand from a commercial clothing manufacturer for next to nothing. Then she got a sewing machine maintenance guy to take the best bits of both of them and put them together into one machine. Still needed a new motor, but ended up reasonably cheap. But yes, it does take up some space.

Juki is a well known , well used brand amongst the sewing groups and sewing forums I belong in .
Janome is also well made and well known.
All my machines are Janome , can't fault them .
Consew is another solid industrial machine worth looking at .

I currently have three machines, a couple of Singers (201k, Heavy duty 4423) and a Janome my style 20. I love the 201 but it's old school and feels like I'm going to get fried any time I use it even though the wiring is good. The heavy duty is cheap and nasty. I love the Janome my style 20.

Plan is to sell the two singers, keep the Janome and buy a new straight stitcher, either the Juki or Janome.

Probably $180. Electricals are good and sews great. Has a wood case. Nice machine. Don't want to post it though. Weighs a tonne.

Fair price for a great machine.
But yes it's pack-up only at that weight

I swear it weighs 25kg! That thing will be sewing long after we've all croaked it. Cast iron is built to last! Non of that flimsy aluminium stuff

I had a look at and a quick sew on a Janome HD9 today. It's pretty awesome!

What's the presser foot height (and the extension) on that one Pete?

I think it's 12mm and maybe 2mm more extension. I'm used to older machines. It was so nice!

When I looked at the three you linked they seemed roughly the same price. Are you able to trial them all? I'll refrain from throwing the Rob Schneider clip here.

The very nice lady in Hobbysew loved the Janome HD9. They use one as one of their shop machines. She said it's nicer to use than its predecessor (1600). I asked her about the Brother and she basically slagged it off. They sell the brother too but she said Janome all the way. The Janome extension table is bigger and better designed too. The Janome also has speed control so you can slow it down for delicate stuff.

They vary in price a bit. The brother can be had for $1600, the Janome for $1800. The Juki about $2100.

There is a place in Penrith that sells the Juki so I'll see if I can have a go on one.

Yes that is quite a difference in price. I reckon if you can't sink the machine into a big sheet/bench as you are limited for space at home the big extension would be gold. Interested how you find the Juki.

$1600- is a very cheap Brother sewing machine, Ceciles cost a lot more than that but it is a computerised one with lots of functions.
Have you considered a rebuild of your old Singer? Rewiring and with a more powerful motor

Actually the old singer has decent wiring and sews well. Just after something that's smoother/easier to use. It's a good machine just a bit too old school if that makes sense.

Not yet. Pretty sure it will be the Janome hd9 but just copped a couple of big bills so it's on the back burner for now. Car service next week so I'll see how the funds are after that. I did manage to sell the Singer heavy duty so that's something.....

After faffing about I ended up buying a Janome MC 6700p. Pretty happy with my decision and broke:)

I also have two 80s Taiwanese Janome, nowt wrong with that. A my style 16 and a 20. Great machines.
