What is this?

I did a traverse of the northern Du Cane Range with a friend in February this year. While scrub bashing up onto Falling Mountain above Du cane Gap, we found the pictured item laying in thick scrub below the tree line. It is steel, possibly stainless, given that there appeared to be no rust. The question is, what on earth is a heavy chunk of steel plate doing sitting in the bush just there - most weird!

Hm, interesting.

On a trip in April I was doing some exploring in a patch of forest off Pine forest moor and I found a big solid steel pipe, maybe 15cm diameter and probably nearly 50kg in weight. No idea how it got there - luckily I had a plumber with me and he claimed that this type of plumbing was used in the 60's / 70's. No idea how it got there but I don't think it was carried in - unfortunately I didn't take a picture.

The only explanation I have for both of these items is that they fell from a helicopter when building / dismantling one of the huts. They usually just have big bags on their slings so I guess something may fall out every now and then. You're item may well be from when they built the new hut at Windy ridge - but I wouldn't know who would use solid steel pipes for building out there. Parks certainly don't. Maybe one of the Cradle Huts or maybe it was going much further west for building one of the hydro dam - who knows...

I still remember where it is and I dont think it would have moved all that far. Might go and take a photo next time I'm nearby.

It looks about the size of a chimney flue from a hut construction maybe?
