TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Guess i should add in my own experience.

I've owned a pair of Garmont Eclipse II XCR shoes for the last few years and have walked the SCT, OT and WA's in them quite happily before they began to crack along the soles. So yeah they had a good life, I'd buy them again.

I recently bought a pair of Garmont SYNCRO PLUS GTX boots, so will reserve judgement for now but hopefully they turn out alright.

Ha, I had the exact same shoes and they were absolutlely ruined in about 3 months. and I mean RUINED. Nearly all the seams came undone and I'm currnetly having the same issues with 4 month old Raichle shoes. But then again I spend nearly all day every day walking.

I bought a pair of Garmont Passo boots two Summers ago. The first pair lasted a month before the sole started to split and fall apart. I got them replaced under warranty 3 times over the following couple of months. Eventually the shop asked what types of walks I was doing and I said Frenchmans Cap, Mt Anne circuit and a number of other lengthy day walks. I was told the boots weren't designed for those tyes of walks. I found this disapointing since I bought them at a bushwalking shop and they were presented as walking boot.
.
I knew they would not be as solid as full leather boots, but I was hoping for better. I later asked one of the shop assistants whether these boots would get me to Frenchmans Cap and he said of course.
.
I was given one last pair under warranty and told no more. I made them last a year, but they were falling apart and constantly leaked despite having Goretex lining.
.
Although they were very comfortable (apart from having no water resistance) I wouldn't recommend them.

Ive been having some minor issues with raichle boots as well, the current pair i have (mammuts) seem to be lasting a bit long, had them about 3-4 months. I fear they only have another 2-3months left though.

From what I hear most boots wont last more than 12months if they are used on a regular basis. I walk 1-2 times per week on some rough tracks, and alot of off track places.

Im coming to terms with this fact but it does seem sad that no one can make a suitable line of boot for the extreme hardcore walker!!

I get nearly 12months out of cheap brands and not much if ANY MORE out of expensive brands! so why do we buy scarpa and raichle and so on so on.......
Nothing to see here.

I bought a pair of Scarpa ZG20s in May 2005 (my first proper bush walking boots). I've flogged them pretty consistently since then to places such as Southern Ranges/PB, W Arthurs, Du Cane Rg etc etc and they are only now reaching the end of their useful life. I admit that some Shoo Goo has been required lately and the soles aren't as grippy as they once were but they haven't suffered massive and premature structural failure like some boots I've seen! Currently the closest equivalent model seems to be the ZG10s - got my eye on those. Think I'll stick to Scarpa for the time being. :D

The ZG10s are pretty expensive- RRP $499, but I found a pair in the UK for $340 incl delivery. Couldn't find anyone in Hobart who currently stocks them.

You can add a SECOND pair of Garmont boots to the rubbish pile in our house- the eyelets broke, the sole fell off from the toe area, and they are definitely worse than the true cheapies such as Merrills and Hitec's. I'm glad other folks have such luck with them, but they are low-grade garbage in our experience.

And I wrote the company around six months ago, and have had no reply whatsoever.

FWIW the boot repairer I've used reckons they are garbage too.

G'day Drifting,
Were your boots made in China as that is what steered me clear of them for my last boot purchase despite really good performance from my previous two pair which were made in Italy and were they full leather or what ? just curious.

Nick s those have the same sole as the GTX flash i have and mine have yet to crack accros..but i only use them for riding the mountain bike now

I do have some Garmont SYNCRO PLUS GTX boots $320(there abouts now) that im not overly happy with...sole is wearing out way to fast(less than 6 months not a gear amount of use) and they slip on any wet rocks i would buy the GTX flash again but not the Syncro

Im trying to find something like the old Rossi Eagles again and "hunting" boots seem to have more options than walking/hiking boots

I'm thinking of getting some North Face hedgehog's-Gore-tex lined. Had my Scarpa Sl's for almost 20 years but want something a bit more breathable (than nothing!) and slightly lighter.

these are made in China- is that enough to look for something else??

I figure for full breathability dont go for goretex but i often find even on on rainless days, there is a fair dew or just mud and puddle remnants around.

I don't know if if it's still on but they had these at the ongoing Paddy Pallin warehouse sale in Lidcombe at 1/2 price. I was thinking about them but got a pair of Keen Targhee II (eVent) instead. I don't think Chinese manufacture in general is necessarily a problem, but looks like it might be for Garmont footwear.
