We all have one. Some of us have more; I have about a dozen, with two used every day, either at home or on a walk. They're a very good way to carry gear, and in some cases, too much gear. There was a discussion a few days ago - what do most people call them? Pack and rucksack seem to be the most popular, although like hiking and bushwalking there may be different and perhaps strongly held views. Or maybe, who cares?
Two questions. What do you call the item that holds your gear, and how many do you have, including day packs?

Lophophaps, isn't
rucksack a bit passé?
Pack and
backpack seem more commonly used. But to quote you:
Or maybe, who cares?

rucken (add an umlaut over the e) means back in German. The term rucksack seems to be in common use in the UK but US cultural imperialism (trail/track etc) has generally won here.

Pack or backpack. I have 6. One I use day in day out, one I use for most day walks then the others fit in and around from UL trips to pack hauling types to canvas n scrubby

Pack/backpack. >8 but shared across the household, from 12L to 45L, including one that's photo gear focused.

I remember the term rucksack from perhaps the 70s. I like it but you just don't here it any more.

6 packs , not rucksacks, the lazy Australian vernacular shorten everything, just a pack
Karrimor( not sure what model but bought in the 70's)
Wilderness Equipment Explorer 2 80L
Macpac Ravine 60L
Exped Lightning 60 , two of these , one is now my training pack as it is pretty knocked about.
Kathmandu 60L

Q2 Not telling! But I do lend ones of various sizes to other people now and then. That's my excuse, anyway.

All this time I thought that a rucksack was one of those canvas thingies with buckles, usually on display in army disposal stores...Oh well.

Pack and more than 10, in my defence my profession for the past decade has involved carrying a pack
