I would appreciate your advice re this tent.

I understand that Katmandu isnt highly regarded by some - I have no experience of their product.

It suits me for weight, price ($149.99) and functionality (3 season weekend hiking).

I would love to get something in cuben fibre but hell who can afford it?

Presumably 50d is 50 denier and 50 is better for protection than 40 right - except it weighs more?

I have looked at options including tarp plus bivvy sack or tarp plus nano net particularly for summer hikes in Victoria but when you add it all up in weight, functionality and cost terms you might as well get a tent like this.

don't expect it to stand up to high winds if you're going to be pitching it anywhere exposed.

A couple of points
1) denier has to do with weight.
Heavier dos not mean better or stronger , it just means heavier.
2) the maximum internal height is 65cm.
That means you cannot sit up inside so it is closer to a bivy than a tent.
Anyway, every tent is a compromise, even those $700 Cuben tents or the Swedish silnylon versions, so you have to figure out where you are happy to compromise.

There is a difference between a trade off and a tent that's just a PITA. Have a look at the Ferrino Lightent series.

You won't be happy with it unless all you want to do is sleep in it. You can't get dressed in it; you can't cook in it and for the amount of shelter it gives it's heavy

You would be better off with this tent from Rays

For less money and a few hundred grams extra you get a real tent not a glorified bivvy
I've used similar to the small bivvy tent and wasn't ever happy

on the last day of the sale I wentt to kathmandu to see the tent set up

the sales guy was very knowledgeable and basically talked me out

looking at a bora tarp

cant understand why the terra rosa equiv. Is so much more even with weak aud / usd and freight

Moondog thanks for the rays suggestions and they arent too far off the value mark but my preference I s lighter weight

I want a good value tarp with tyvek ground sheet and a bug net for what I now want

Add up first the cost and weight of tarp/pegs/bivvy (and or mesh inner*)/Tyvek sheet before you pull the trigger because something like a Tarptent ProTrail could be close to it but lighter and faster to set up...

( personal opinion but to try to rest and then sleep inside a non mesh enclosed tarp with all the bugs we have here is not my idea of fun...)
