3?? Season MYOG quilt - my first serious project

Just completed my synthetic quilt. It was a very interesting and somewhat theraputic task........I found patience I didn't know I had
Thanks to all who offer their ideas and demo their skills............I wouldn't have known where to start without your posts.

Materials list - all purchased from Tiergear...thanks Simon

Argon 67 - brown 2 metres
Ripstop nylon 37 g/m² (1.1oz) - breathable/calendered - black - 2 metres
Climashield Apex 6.0oz - Insulation - 2 metres (4 units)

Total cost for the quilt $100.00 even (excluding postage)

I cut the top and bottom materials together with my soldering iron..........serves two purposes in sealing the edges and welding the two sheets of fabric together.
Cut the insulation a bit outside the material size.........maybe could have given another 25mm to tighten the fit.
The footbox is wider than it is high as I'm a side sleeper.
Stitched diagonally on corners to hold the insulation in place.
Strategically placed thread loops sewing top and bottom together but with slack to allow the insulation to loft.
In dry bag - 360 long x 200 wide x 150 high - 757 grams.

Thanks Moondog......I basically made it as big as I could width wise and 1950mm long with about 900mm of the length tapered down to 1000mm wide. It progressed from there ending up what ever dimensions came out of making it "properly" and of good strong construction. As it turns out it seems just right. The footbox is about 400mm deep which is how I like it as my feet usually get too hot otherwise.

The edges were sewn together at about 8mm right side out then turned inside out and sewn at about 9mm to hide the ends.
I probably lost more than planned by doing that but ended up with a nice clean appearing edge when I turned it right side out.

I have never sewn anything much before except for a couple of Tyvek stuff sacks.........my wife can't believe how it turned out for a first attempt. It was a very enjoyable exerscise.

That's big enough to get a down half sack inside to get winter use from it so get a down half-bag and you're right to go

Thanks Dan. Unfortunately I still don't know. The work gods stuffed my plan for yesterday. Starting to get desperate to find out and may resort to a night in the backyard before long

Sadly I haven't had a proper opportunity to test it out Lizzy, but I have made another one which has a slightly wider footbox.
I made the second one for my wife but it seems it will become mine because of the bigger footbox.
At this stage we've used them indoors only and they are very cosy and comfortable.
With the winter on us they might have to wait until late spring to get a fair test now..............but you never know .............

I forgot to mention........much to my surprise, making this one wider at the foot and also about 70mm longer (squeezed all I could out of the material) only added a few grams in weight.
I guess this would be the partly the different outer material used. The first one had 37gm calendered ripstop nylon and the second is 30.5gm Argon 90.
It could also be the possibility of a very slight variation in the insulation weight as there was more insulation as well.

What minimum temps do you think you'll have on that trip Lizzy?

Maybe minimum 10 degrees or so. Last year I remember it being chilly but can't quite remember how chilly- I took hubby's SD nitro 30 bag. This year I'm taking hubby so there goes that plan. I have a fairy down booster bag which may be ok- it's nice and compact and light. Otherwise I have a WM Apache which I would cook in! Last year I made the boys Apex 2oz quilts- not sure if these will be warm enough so may stick with their 30 degree F bags too even tho a heavier/bulkier.
Also tempted by something like this for simplicity

I don't think you would have any problems with the quilt at 10 degrees (C that is).
I actually made them for the exercise and to have a light sleeping bag for around the 5 plus range.
I think clothing or layers (ie. thermals) would be needed around the 5 deg. mark.

I plan to put them both up on offer one of these days. Just haven't got around to it as they are hardly a winter seller
We weren't unhappy with them they were fine it's just that I wanted to make a quilt and not have to stuff (no pun intended) around with down.
