The prevalence of discarded white tissues on all of the few bushwalks I have been on.

What is the go with them? - the *&%$#! things are everywhere.

No, I want to give way to downhill walkers - that gives me a chance to catch my breath! But I dislike those without the grace to say "thank-you." Particularly if its a large group - of course its better for the solo or small group walker to step off the path, but a "thank you" would be nice. Its good to snarl "you're welcome" when its the parents or teachers tho, and that seems to cheer the kids up no end

BANG! Thats a biggy. Single white tissues Yaaarrrgghhh!!!!!!!!! .............sorry but that really cheeses me off.
At the risk of an attack..............left by "Ladies" so to speak. Grrrr!
I walked into a really nice spot for an overnighter camp by a lake earlier in the year. There was hundreds of the *&%$#! things, next to every little bush in the area.
Possibly left by boaties not walkers....I hope.

I forgot to mention there was a long drop dunny there too!

A few drops in the dacks is hardly going to kill them. My better half manages to survive it alright.

i can relate to this one. They tell you it's only an hour or so but it takes you two - so not only are you annoyed for not arriving in time but you start wondering if you are the slowest walker on the planet....

Mmmmm, thought we were talking about nose blowing tissues. Now I see the bigger picture.
Didn't think about that reason. Lol.

Only perplexed by others when they are virtually sitting on top of me and I can't help but hear. Or well...stuffing their face in front of me when I'm craving what they are eating.

And in case you don't know, a well known euphemism in oz is to tell someone 'go take a hike'. I've never heard anyone tell another to' go take a bushwalk' when they are cheesed off with them. Invasive, I think not, been around a long time.

Pet hate !!!
I'm a pretty friendly fella. Why when I say hello or other greating pleasantry to someone in the middle the bush is it ignored while they walk past viewing there feet, often when I've stepped aside to let them past. Doesn't happen often but anoy's the crap out of me when it does. Just common manners isn't it to acknowledge another human being.
It's not like I'm standing on the train saying hi to every random person. We are out enjoying the outdoors, often many many miles from anyone else.

Things you hate, dislike or annoy you when camping/bushwalki

Postby GPSGuided » Fri 27 Jun, 2014 9:28 am

I know why Forest. Clearly it's a case where the terrain is at fault. Climbing that 1:2 grade is nothing to you with your superior fitness but it's at death door for some. No air nor energy to utter one more word. ;)

I know, it's hard

Even worse when you pass a couple of people sitting outside there tent on Larapinta, who've just watched you walk towards them from 50m way, clearly relaxing, not puffed.....and get no response from all of 2m. (insert sigh.......)

Think positive. Those two sitting outside the tent may have been psychopaths, searching for their next victim. No words or interest may be a blessing in disguise. You are blessed Forest!

Other people.
Cold wind on an otherwise warm (or hot) sunny day. It's impossible to be comfortable.
Wet scrub. Nothing gets you soaked through as thoroughly or as quickly as pushing through wet scrub.

Traditional etiquette is that downhill has right of way - it's easier for the uphill walker to stop.
Personally, I'll almost always get off the track rather than hoping someone else will. I'm smaller and lighter than most other walkers and, therefore will do less damage. Of course, it doesn't matter when scrub bashing.

Yep.

Add to that, scrub bashing and then promptly having the scrub below your feet break leaving you head deep in impenetrable scrub. With a pack. Dammit.

I'd always thought uphill had right of way. That explains the anger amongst people.

I should edit that to: Other people. Especially the ones who think you have some immutable responsibility to talk to them just because your paths have crossed. (sorry, forest  )

Other way round I always thought - its harder for the uphill walker to get going again.

Clearly a point of confusion and source of endless disharmony (I suspect the rule may have something to do with whether one came from the northern or southern hemisphere, whether one is right side up or upside down). I just always give the courtesy and see what develops. A mutually acceptable solution have always developed, and then repeated with the next encounter.

I'd always wondered about uphill/downhill etiquette. For me, downhill has the right of way...and only because I have had to think and rationalise this... its because down-hill are quicker and have momentum and the uphill guys probably appreciate the rest.

Probably a carry over from skiing, where uphill gives way to downhill. ( Or risks getting cleaned up.)

Downhill gives way to uphill, in 4wding circles. It's safer/ easier for the vehicle going downhill to stop or move off the track and stop then it is for the driver going uphill.

There's always exceptions to the rule and in my case I would always base the decision on the conditions there and then and regardless of which way I'm traveling if I can get out of someone's way and let them pass I will.

Bushwalking - same thing I'll generally always stop in a convenient location and wait for the oncoming person(s) to pass/ have a chat if they are the sociable type.

Yes it's no big deal and particularly if there's an easier way to for me to make way for someone else who cares who has "right of way".
