Always amuses me to see some walkers lugging a heavy camera kit and you glance down and see it on that big green auto setting.

There is nothing inherently wrong in using an auto setting. I use "auto" a lot of the time in my photography - often auto ISO, often aperture priority (so the shutter speed is set automatically) - and often with an exposure compensation. I also use the "P" setting a fair bit - especially when you need to get shots in a hurry. This is "auto" in both exposure and aperture.
What is more important is not what setting you use - but your creativity. How you compose the photo etc.
