eVent rain pant alterations

Thu 13 Dec, 2012 10:05 pm

Thanks to Blacksheep generous X-mas offer I just got myself a pair of Macpac Resolution pants and as always when buying pants they are a little bit too long. I'm after advise on how to best and easiest shorten them a bit.
They have ankle zippers and cuffs so I rather avoid stuffing around down there. The only area where there's not too many seems etc are the mid thighs. I was thinking of just cutting off a bit and sew the ends back together and then seam seal with something. I don't care too much how it will look as long as they are waterproof and not weakened.

What needle size should I get?
What thread?
What stich length?
What seam sealer? Tape or tube or both? (I haven't got an iron..but could probably come up with something else to do the job. Heat gun? A hot pot?)
Any handy tips?
Anyone knows someone not too far from Hobart that would do it on the cheap?

Hi Stibb,
80 is the size needle that is best,
75 weight thread (polycotton or nylon )
5 - 5 .5 stitches per cm ,
mid-thigh is a good place to take length from, you will have to run in the seam from the upper thigh to make the two parts marry.
as for seam taping, there no ideal home solution, perhaps AquaSeal (by McNett) is the best option for internally, manually sealing the seams.
Best of luck.

Remote repairs in Melb can handle this repair, yes, but probably easier for communication if Stibb contacted Ray directly using this form http://www.remoterepairs.com.au/?page_id=43 to explain exactly what she wants to him.

Thanks Cam.
I sent of a message for a quote but I should be able to do it myself.

When I run in the seam from the upper thigh, how do I get the old tape off or can I just go right through?

The glue is heat activated, but so is the adhesive that is used to laminate the fabric (ie. be careful). The activation temp of the tape glue is quite a bit lower tho, so if you try a warm/mid hot iron (on tape side) you will be able to peel it back. experiment with temp and dwell time on the section you are cutting out...
