Air Mattress for the larger person?

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Air Mattress for the larger person?

Postby matthewgoodyear » Fri 20 Apr, 2012 1:59 pm

Can anyone suggest an air matress than a person in the 120kg weight range could sleep on without it popping like a baloon?
This is a serious question!

thankyou

Lol, I thought it said Air mistress! Might want to correct the header.

Umm but yeah matresses - the Large size neo air would be my suggestion. Be it in Xlite, Xtherm, All Season or whatever best suits your needs. On of my regular companions is not far off 120kg and uses Neos

I read the subject as 'Air Mistress" Evokes an entirely different image

Not sure about your question, a 110kg friend used my Neoair with no problem, but I was a bit worried...

the thicker the better where weight is concerned, but that said my old 38mm thermarest has given me no problems since I repaired the repair.
Just don't blow them up rock-hard, which is where the extra thickness comes in

Hey, I resemble that remark! Actually more under 110 kilograms than 120 kilograms as much as I love my pack I do not sleep with it on.
I have experienced no issues apart from needing to put a bit more air in before turning in. You will need a decent size lung capacity as the volume is significantly more. In addition, a Prolite and Exped Downmat have been ok.

Must admit that the new X-Lite feels very fragile but it works well. Would not recommend jumping on it though.

Cheers

Exped Downmat or Synmat are streets ahead of any Neoair in terms of comfort and build quality. You won't regret it!

Whatever. Thermarest/MSR may still have the runs on the board re: quality/durability and therefore materials to lightness ratio. They kicked off the game and the rest are folowers.

Sure they kicked off the game, but whether the rest are followers is debatable (or is it?). IMO Thermarest has been left behind by the rest of the pack.

The Neoair is not a good quality mattress. Yes it is very light, but it is also very noisy and very fragile.

I lost 16kg this way for my wedding and it honestly wasn't hard, just took a lot of self-discipline!

Ahh just tell him that the bigger you are the greater the share of the equipment, i mean stands to reason doesn't it??
so if he's 20 kg bigger than you he gets to carry 20kg more in HIS pack.
Buy a new one and just return it if it blows up/deflates, or just use double CCF pads instead

What problems have you experienced with them? I've had mine a fair while now, paid no special care and can't fault it. Same goes for a fair few people I know.

I honestly think the noise problem is totally blown out of proportion. I've never lost a minute of sleep due to the slight crinkle that is probably quieter than the rusle of my sleeping bag fabric.

And weight/warmth they are unbeatable. I just don't get it, who has overtaken them?

not sure where my reply went...!!!

I use the bodymedia fit that is used on the biggest loser us and UK. it measures all the calories your body burns and your sleep too.
Tracks and graphs it all online.

WIll be interesting to see the stats from the great north walk

Yup, agreed, no noise problem and can't fault it's durability, what you been doing on that thing Strider?

My only criticism is I'd like it to be a cpl inches wider.

Wev'e had some fairly hefty people use our mats and no problems. The exped mats longitudinal baffles I find more comfortable to sleep on. Bare in mind that they are much more likely to seperate and render the mat useless.

Yes, but if heading out in snow the Neo Air X-lite may not be warm enough. The rest should be fine.

Generally from what I have read and experienced:
Exped Syn/downmat - most comfy, but heavier, bigger packed size and few issues with delamination.
Neo Airs - best warmth to weight ratio, better longevity, small when packed up, not quite as comfy.
Old style thermarests - Heavy, uncomfortable and a big package when rolled, but the ultimate for reliability (after cc foam of course).

ok...i'll be doing the great north walk. it will be cold, maybe wet, but certainly no snow. The mattress wont get used that much ...probably 10 nights on this trip and if i go well i might plan something else for early next year.
But perhaps i will catch the bug and do more! who knows.

The blokes at work told me to harden up and to sleep on the ground just in my sleeping bag and swag. sod that. i need comfort to sleep. I cant sleep on a plan, in a car, on a train or on the lounge..so im screwed if the wife kicks me out! So the more comfort the better! heck, if i could carry a 10 kilo blow up matress like me and the wife first slept on..then i would, but im not Thor so i cant!

The blokes at work are WRONG
Start from the ground up
you can save weight tho by using the old standby combination, CCF mat for insulation and a 2/3 or 3/4 airbed for comfort ( or a Thermarest what-ever) the main trouble I have found is the wider mats which big blokes ( and big sheilas too ) need for comfort only come in full length mattresses, and a warm mat means you will only a lighter sleeping bag ( only took me 20 years to learn this )

I slept on mine once, and spent virtually the entire night awake due to the noise as I just couldn't get comfortable unless it was at least half deflated. And then the noise got even worse, and the cold started seeping through as well. I sold it on Ebay and bought an Exped Downmat UL7 and haven't looked back - the baffle design and fabric durability is just so much better. A little extra weight (200g) but it does have a much higher R value (5.9 vs 2.5), so that is to be expected.

Sums it up perfectly IMO.

It really does come down to purpose. If you want lightweight and can forego some comfort, the Neoair is perfect if you can stand the crinkling. However, if comfort is a major factor, there is no beating the Exped.

Being deaf is helpful. I can't hear mine. And, like sthughes, my only comfort issue is that slight narrowness but I'm a restless sleeper.

I'd probably have one of the bigger figures of the forum, coming in at a genuine 140kg, the Doc tells me I am 50 kg past optimum weight for my height...

Fitness has always been good, however... the subject of sleeping is a popular one of my ponderings.

I use a z-rest beneath the tent, and a pro-lite thermarest between my bag and the tent floor. This combo is not bad at all- and the assessment is based on setting up on a hard surface, not with grass beneath the tent.

However, for the ultimate in luxury, I bring the 40th Anniversay edition Thermarest, still with the z-rest beneath the tent floor (we don't use a footprint- very slim mrs just uses a Ridgerest beneath her side of the tent) and this system has served us well.

I know some folk like the idea of a footprint, but my rationale is... if I manage to hole the Thermarest, I will tolerate a z-rest better than I will tolerate "no-rest".

I did have the luxurious opportunity of being able to try a Thermarest Camp-Rest , and the 40th Anniversary current offering equals or surpasses it. For your hiking happiness, a great night's sleep is essential.

A "CampRest" OMG if I carried one of those I would be guaranteed a nites sleep, I'd be so exhausted I could sleep on an iceberg without waking up until morning. That said very comfortable indeed.
