The Mighty Western Arthurs!

Postby ILUVSWTAS » Mon 16 Nov, 2009 5:15 pm

Just got back from an incredible adventure into the Western Arthurs! NickS and myelfs ventured in for 5 days and had it all from 2 HOT days to 2 mornings of rain which cleared to fine afternoons and a day of indifference, 14hrs of walking from High Moor to Scotts peak! We had a tent ripped in Strong winds and the person inside awoke to being a bit wet. It was a miserable morning and when home was mentioned we dared ourselves to try and make it back that day! A wet day along the begary bumps actually made for pleasant walking and im pleased to report no falls or no packhauling was required!
13 of the possible 15 peaks in the A-K end of the range were bagged by myself for a total of 30 points taking my tally to 202. My 200th was bought up on Mt Taurus which coincidently happens to also be my ZODIAC sign!
An amazing place! Truly amazing!!

I am already planning a return to bag the peaks I left behind and visit the other end of the range we had to miss out!!

Pictures and some more story as follows.....

The range draws near. And Moraine A! It was a slog up but as always places you hear about as being nasty are rarely as bad as you picture!
2.JPG
The peaks pop up in front of you the instant you hit the top of the range

And as expected the views were stunning!
Nothing to see here.

Then the side trips began! Procyon was probably the hardest though still relatively easy except for one spot near the top.
This cool little Bivy cave was up near the top! Someone either wanted sunrise/set shots or was forced into making emergency shelter. They did a good job though!!

Then there were the Sunrises and Sunsets!
We spent 2 days at Oberon which was really really nice, and a good place to do the Pegasus south sidetrip from!

Then it was off again towards High Moor! Over Mt Capricorn and a side trip to Dorado peak which was really really enjoyable! A short trip to Mt Colombo and then down to our last campsite High Moor. The water was somewhat dodgy but otherwise a very nice place!

Then it was time to bag Mt Scorpio and exit the Range! It gave us one last magic view before we started down Moraine K! We took the shortcut across the plains to meet Mckays track then along to Junction. It took 14 hrs to reach the car and the last 2 hrs we were walking by head torch light!

A great adventure, A great walking parnter in a great place! And one good book between us.......

Great photos ILUVSWTAS :) . I'd better enjoy them as it's probably as close to the Western Arthurs as I'm likely to get . Looks like it was an enjoyable if somewhat challenging trip.
