Red Rock Canyon - Calico tanks and some off trail scrambles

Tue 10 Dec, 2013 10:58 am

I have visited Las Vegas on many occasions and its always been about the casinos, shows and over indulgence. So the last time I visited (just as a stop over to Zion), the last thing I expected to do was over indulge on was some outdoor fun which extended my stay.

Red Rock Canyon is about 30 to 40 minutes from the strip. It is easily accessible and does not require overly technical skills so sturdy hiking boots with grip is really all you need. What I really love about this place is that there are less tourists as you will more likely find locals hiking the trails and almost everywhere you go the rocks and mountains scream out for you to explore and find your own path which makes for a lot of fun and explorations.

Here are some pictures of the Calico tanks trail and some of my own path finding adventures.

The "easy" parts of the Calico tanks trail as you can clearly see where you're supposed to go.

You won't find overly impressive views on this trail but you do get to see some interesting rock patterns and formations.

Here is the fun bit, picking your own path.

The view at the "end" of the trail is pretty ordinary as it just looks out towards Las Vegas. But it's not about the destination on this hike rather the journey that you create for yourself.

I was not content with just getting to the "end" of the trail. So I decided to find a way to get up higher. As you can see it's not difficult. There is some inclination and you do need good grip on your boots but its easy to access.

Going further up gets you 360 views and you get to see the surrounding mountain ranges not just smoggy Las Vegas!

Do a bit of exploration and you can find hidden oasis like this little watering hole which appears to be used by local wildlife.
this guy.jpg
Found this little guy along the way. No idea what it is though?
narrow.jpg
There are plenty of chances to find yourself in narrow sections such as this. Reminiscent of the fiery furnace in Arches but without the need of getting a permit.

Met some locals on the trail and was shown the "rabbit hole". You climb up where the man is, do a bit of crawling and then slide down into a hole that ends up where the light is coming from.

Sorry but have I miss read your post? Is the wedding going to be *in* the Red Rock Canyon area?

Yes its definately worth taking time to do Red Rocks. If you're game you could also visit Calico basin which is accessible just before you get into the official entrance of Red Rock Canyon.
