Christchurch 24hr check in hostels

Postby ninjapuppet » Thu 30 May, 2013 2:49 pm

So apparently Christchurch airport started letting people sleep there overnight again from the 22 may 2013 after many complaints. While it's not banned, I feel if the locals aren't keen on it, then we as visitors shouldn't do it.

Most budget accommodation reception closes at 7-9pm and with Jetstar being the cheapest airline to CHC arriving often at 1 am, this creates a problem. Particularly so when I have an 7am bus to catch in the morning. I wouldn't want to go cheap with Jetstars $215 return flight syd-chc then to pay another 215 bucks on accommodation for 6 hours.

I've come up with a list of hostels I have stayed at in Christchurch with after hours check in that I have stayed at. Beds starting at 25 nz bucks and rooms starting at 55 bucks.

Sounds like you have been to Christchurch quite a few times there ninja!

Have stayed at YHA - has 24 hour reception from memory but is pretty soulless...

All backpackers in major cities have a system for late check-ins, e.g. leave a key out for you etc ... but some may not advertise it. I can't imagine them not accepting your business just because you are turning up late!

a lot of places in nz have firm closing times and won't admit new people after a certain hour

New people being people that haven't stayed there previously?

meaning if you're already checked in you may have a door code, card or key to get you in after they shut, , but once they are shut a lot of places won't check anyone in... I've found the YHA's I've been to, to have strict rules about that especially in the smaller towns. and even in party central Queenstown...
and some of the closing times can be relatively early in the evening, especially in the smaller town... Invercargill for instance just seems to close up shop completely pretty early , even on a friday night.... a lot of nz hasnt moved with the times and gone to become a 24 hour society, i can still remember a time when weekend shopping was non existant in nz. except for dairies and petrol stations... auckland was described as a graveyard with traffic lights on the weekend....
a lot of towns are still really conservative about their opening hours
don't over estimate the service you'll get in chch, nz might have a lot of tourists but there are still conservative attitudes about service... hence the problem with people at the airport at night....
from the land of the long white clouds...
