Anyone used this and can tell me if it can be folded fairly often before it rips/falls apart.
I want it to act as a hinge for a windscreen. Its not cheap and far more than I need hence I would only buy it if it can be folded I would think at least 20-30 times before it fails. I get the impression it's just supermarket baking tin foil with a glue on it?
Looking for any users of this or one like this please. If anyone has a link to a narrower and shorter length tape I'd be interested -seems this length and width is all I can find.

It's not really designed for repeated folding, but you can also get reinforced ducting tape that has fibre through it like cloth duct tape.

I think I have some leftover in the shed if you want a few lengths that would fit in a standard envelope ? (If I can find it...)

If it's the foil stuff, yes please. The reinforcing may make it last a bit longer? I'll have a crack and report back.

Seriously. Check how it handles heat. I used some locally sourced adhesive al foil to hold a reflexit pot cozy together but the heat of the pot caused the glue to soften and the cozy to slowly disintegrate.

Is the adhesive heat resistant?
Could you maybe use a cheap aluminum hinge from the hardware and secure with a bit of thin wire? Then it would be permanent too. Some small ones are pretty lightweight.
Don't try the duct tape as mentioned above as that's excellent kindling and not the surprise you want.

If the silicon glue melts your windscreen is far too close to the flames. It doesn't last forever tho it seems to last well enough for my needs, I make my windshield big using 200mm aluminium flashing

I have just been out to my shed and i have some of this tape from bunnings and i dont think it would last five minutes near heat .It is very thin
You could just make some holes near the edge and pass a round loop of small aluminium wire connecting them together forming a hinge
maybe three or four hinges bit agricultural but would last then

It’s good stuff & reasonably durable.

I used it to construct my pot cosies which are still looking like new after multiple uses & no sign of the reinforcing tape adhesive breaking down so far..!

I can't quite picture the hinging of your windshield. However, if you or anyone else wants to make a high-temperature hinge that will stick to metal, then Acetic Cure RTV silicone rubber will do the trick. It can be made strong by embedding shirt cotton fabric into it.

It does not sound likely but the impregnated shirt cotton is good for 200C+. I doubt that your metal windshield will get that hot, otherwise, your cooking would be very inefficient. I imagine you could easily cut little slim hinges from a small sheet of the DIY impregnated fabric. Then they could be stuck on with more RTV to your windscreen at the required hinging points.

Here is a sheet of the impregnated cotton that is probably much bigger than you would need. Do you have any RTV in your back shed? I could post you a bit of the impregnated cotton in an 'old age pensioner letter' if you like.



Here is a photo of a hinging flap on a high temperature stop pipe jack. The extra ring of pure RTV is added to give a temperature resistance of 300C.

Hi Tim ta for the offer, that's really good of you, but at the moment I think I'm all right. I've just been putting the tape over the 'hinge'/fold of late to extend the life of my Al foil screen. I tried using it over a greater area but found it was not really extending the life of the screen (and wasting too much tape) anywhere near as much as placing it just on stress (tear) points. You can see 2 patches of the 3m tape I received from Turfa in the pic above. It also allows me to add small reinforcing holes to the foil at the bottom. One little dodgy screen now lasts many cuppas. I only have one fold now also-so less stress and tears.
