DIY pyramid tent with winter entry vestibule

This tent design is a concession to ‘let’s say mature age” winter backpacking that is preferably on skis. The large square pyramid tent has an additional winter entry vestibule added to one side. It is designed to comfortably accommodate 3-4 people, their winter gear and a large but light downdraft tent stove.

The sloping vestibule only adds an extra 13% to the fabric weight, but it provides comfortable and clean entry to the tent under adverse weather conditions. It also provides a large vertical surface in which to form an all-weather netted ventilation window that can be regulated from inside the tent. The vestibule doorway zipper allows easy stooped entry in bad weather. A second zipper along the vestibule ridge can be opened for full walk-in entry in good weather and it can be used as a very large rooftop vent for good ventilation when weather permits from inside the tent. It is also good for star-gazing from inside the tent.

When the tent weight of 1,500g is shared between 3 or 4 backpackers, it makes a very light load.

Here is a little video tour of the inside of the large pyramid tent with a vestibule.
