These are the names I’ve seen thrown around online for fabrics used for puffer jackets and sleeping bags etc.

I have no experience with sewing and making clothing but my mum does, and has a few machines I could mess around with. I thought I might start with a stuff sack and see how I go, but I’d like to use something light weight that’s potentially transferable for more elaborate projects down the line.

Any idea where I’d source these tech fabrics or similar in Australia?

I’d love a source for heat sealable polyurethane nylon for packrafts if anyone has one. The DIY packraft site doesn’t seem to sell fabric outside a packraft kit.

Edit...possibly 'Membrane'? RSBTR sells Membrane-it's not too hard to order from them.

Awesome! Tiergear seems to have enough to keep me busy. I think I looked at rip stop by the roll before posting here. Looks good for larger order where shipping costs aren’t as significant. I reckon I’ll just order a metre and see how I go with a stuff sack or two. Even getting used to sewing with light material I’m sure is a bit of a learning curve.

I pulled out the over locker that was purchased in the 80s and think it might be in need of a service.

Yeah, if you can make a good stuff sack, it starts all sorts of sewing

I’ve always used waterproof fabrics for stuff sacks, and then use venture double sided tape to tape seal the seems, or I’ve done a sort of mock French seam - sew fabric together with inside of fabric facing each other. Trim to 3-4mm, the evert, and sew outside faces together at 6mm, thereby burying the edge in the seam. You can then fold it flat along the seam and put a line or two of stitching parallel to the fabric join….yep,I know this is hard to understand. I would have loved to just draw it!

I have never used an overlocker, although my domestic machine has an overlocking stitch. My best purchase this year was an electric hot knife, which I wish I’d bought 20yrs ago. They are surprisingly cheap, and make lots of projects way easier.

I have a few metres of an UL fabric I purchased from TierGear a couple of years ago that I'm now not going to need as I think that EPIC is better for my situation. Happy to sell it at cost plus postage

Overlockers aren't much use for outdoor gear. Once the thread is broken the whole lot quickly comes undone. You'll notice that almost all outdoor gear you buy just uses a straight lock stitch. If the thread is damaged from abrasion / wear, the whole lot won't come undone. If all you're planning to do is work with lightweight fabrics, a simple sewing machine should have you covered.

Ah! Well there you go. Total noob here. Appreciate the info. I have access to a standard machine so perhaps can avoid getting the over locker serviced then. Cheers.

No information as Simon had none
I can post you a small sample tho.
UL at around 28GSM, it is grey in colour and I guess about 15D Maybe 20D

It’s probably a bit heavier than I’d like. I was originally after 7D, but tiergear’s lightest seems to be 10D.

7D is very difficult to sew on some machines, neither of mine will handle it at all.
Personal opininion but it really is only practical in sleeping bags, while almost a miracle it isn't robust enough for my clothing uses and it leaked down like crazy in the one garment I saw that used it

A sleeping bag / quilt is potentially the goal. Eventually.
